Suspect in Mt. Vernon Bank Robberies Arrested in Florida

MT. VERNON -- Police say a man wanted for two bank robberies in Mt. Vernon has been arrested in Florida.

Willie Franklin, 37, of Urbana, Illliois, was taken into custody Wednesday.

Mt. Vernon Police say Franklin is suspected of robbing two banks in the city, Fifth Third Bank and GenFed Credit Union, as well as several other banks in Illinois, Missouri, and Indiana.

The robbery at the GenFed Credit Union on South 42nd Street occurred on December 11. Fifth Third Bank on Broadway was robbed January 5.

Franklin is being held in Florida awaiting extradition to Illinois.
