How to Stop Spam Emails and Comments on Wordpress Sites ...

Confused Customer

Spam is the use of electronic messaging systems to send unsolicited bulk messages, especially advertising, indiscriminately. While the most widely recognized form of spam is e-mail spam, the term is applied to similar abuses in other media.

After a new WordPress website has been built for my customers, some customers contact me upset thinking their email inbox has been attacked with spam emails and maybe a virus is there. Likewise, they see all the comments coming into their WordPress Site?s administration screen with jumbled up text that makes no sense.? They are confused and upset.

This article helps to explain what is going on when you see these mumbled up messages. WordPress Software has a built in feature where viewers to your website can leave a comment on your website page or on a blog article page. These comments appear below the page content. Normally having your website pages available for engagement by your viewers/customers is a good thing. Comments added by others starts a dialogue regarding the page subject and can help your business create sales.

However, the internet also has nuisances to put up with, SPAM. There are tons of companies/people using? automatic programs out there that regularly cruise through websites picking up opportunities to spread their message. These software programs find your comment areas and online forms and dump ?trash text? into those forms and submit them to your website. This results in spam emails delivered to your inbox and comments delivered to your WordPress Comment Section of your administation screen. What a nuisance!

Two Ways to Stop WordPress Spam Comments

  • Each time you create a new post there are several options to choose from when creating that post. After you have created your post, go back to your list of posts by clicking on the ?Post? Menu Link where you see a list of your posts. Under each post listing are links; click on the ?quick edit? link. A drop down of that post?s information appears. One of the options available to turning off comments and pingbacks. Turn these to OFF. This will eliminate spam comments and spam pingbacks. You will have to do this task for each post.

List of Posts, click on Quick Edit and check off the Comments and Pingback Options

  • Askimet Plugin comes with your WordPress Software Install. Askimet Plugin blocks spam from your website. There is a cost for this service. You can activate your Askimet Plugin under the Plugins Menu Link. There are other WordPress Spam Blocker Plugins you can install on your site. Some are free and others cost.

What About Receiving Emails with Spam Content?

Captcha

If you are receiving emails from your website from your online forms, chances are your online form needs to include the captcha plugin. The captcha plugin creates the form area where you type in the text shown in an image box before submitting the online form. This keeps the automatic systems from filling out your online forms.

I hope this helps explain SPAM regarding your WordPress Website. As always, I?m here to answer your questions. Feel Free to pick up the phone and ask questions.

Happy Trails!
