This group has organized a massive 1.6 million fundraising campaign to replace the 25 year old running track and the overused central athletic field. The committee members are: Dr. Lynn Krizic; Superintendent of Portsmouth Schools, Stephen Trezvant; Portsmouth High School?s Athletic Director, Ed & Julia Coll, Keith Hamilton, Ted Clement, Gary Eggeman and Christine Jenkins.

The Portsmouth school committee, administration and key faculty have agreed that this is a very worthwhile and long overdue effort. The existing track is non-regulation size, can no longer be resurfaced, and the community may not host any league meets. The central field?is saved for games only and is in deplorable condition. The new proposed ?synthetic turf? field and track will be a centerpiece for the Portsmouth community, young and old.?

The cost of the new track and field is approximately $1.6 million. We have already raised a $500,000 challenge grant and we are now seeking matching funds! As a family business owner, you may want to bring your children or other family members into your business. You may have already done so and discovered it?s been a bumpy ride. How do you do work with family members and still protect family relationships?
According to Ricci M. Victorio, CSP?, managing partner at Mosaic Family Business Center, this can be a difficult thing to do.
?When family members work together, the boundary between work and family time becomes blurred, and the relationships overlap,? says Victorio. ?Families need to think through how to separate the parent/child relationship from the owner/employee relationship.?
Smart Business spoke with Victorio about how to preserve family relationships and set boundaries while working together as a family.
Why is it important to separate family relationships from business relationships?
It?s pretty clear that you can?t run a business like a family, and you certainly can?t run a family like a business. So when family members work for you, it can get very complicated. Family relationships are based upon unconditional love and acceptance. Business is all about performance and accountability. So how do you hold your family members accountable to performance without getting it confused with love? How do you demote or fire a family member without destroying your family? It is na?ve to think that your company?s employee handbook will be sufficient for these complicated issues.
How do you untangle those relationships?
An experienced succession adviser can help you create a family member employment policy to define the qualifications for entering the business, such as education and job experience. This should include the minimum requirement of two to three years working somewhere else before beginning their career in the family business. Working in an environment where your successors are employees and a manager can hold them completely accountable for doing stupid things or be acknowledged for doing a great job is extremely important before coming under the scrutiny of your management team.
In a family business, negative behaviors of developing successors might be overlooked, tolerated or excused, but in the outside world, where their last name isn?t on the wall, these behaviors create real consequences that provide opportunities for learning.

It?s never too late. A succession adviser can help you begin to untangle the knots that have people tied up. Next-generation family members can exhibit entitled, blas? or even toxic behavior at any age.
Don?t think you can turn a blind eye to it if you want to have a smooth and successful leadership transition. The situation can be turned around if you address it with determination and commitment.

However, if done right, it can be extremely rewarding to to see your children growing and thriving in a business that you?ve created, contributing to the company, being respected by others and perpetuating your legacy into the next generation.

An innovative strategy for regenerating skeletal muscle tissue using cells derived from the amniotic fluid is outlined in new research published by scientists at the UCL Institute of Child Health.
The paper shows that damaged muscle tissues can be treated with cells derived from the fluids which surround the fetus during development, leading to satisfactory regeneration and muscle activity. The treatment resulted in longer survival in mice affected by a muscle variant of spinal muscular atrophy. This is the first time that regeneration of diseased muscle tissue has been obtained using cells derived from amniotic fluid.
The research appears in the journal Stem Cells, is authored by Dr Paolo de Coppi (UCL Institute of Child Health and surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital) and colleagues in Paris and Padova, and represents an impressive development in the growing field of regenerative medicine.
Muscle derived stem cells are presently considered the best source for muscle regeneration. However they cannot be used to treat muscular dystrophies because the stem cells themselves are affected in individuals with these conditions. Due to this challenge, other cell sources have been explored but so far no definitive treatment has been successful.
De Coppi's team has demonstrated that intravenous transplantation of amniotic fluid stem (AFS) cells enhances the muscle strength and improves the survival rate of the affected animals. This is the first study to demonstrate the functional and stable integration of AFS cells into skeletal muscle, highlighting their value as a cell source for the treatment of muscular dystrophies.
However, the research is still at a relatively early stage as the work has only been carried out in animal models.
Dr Coppi said: "Spinal muscular atrophy is a genetic disease affecting one in 6,000 births. It is currently incurable and in its most severe form children with the condition may not survive long into childhood. Children with a less severe form face the prospect of progressive muscle wasting, loss of mobility and motor function. There is an urgent need for improved treatments.
"We are excited by this potential new approach for regenerating skeletal muscle tissue, but much more research is needed. We now need to perform more in-depth studies with human AFS cells in mouse models to see if it is viable to use cells derived from the amniotic fluid to treat diseases affecting skeletal muscle tissue."

'Safe' levels of arsenic in drinking water found to compromise pregnant/lactating mothers, offspring
Friday, June 1, 2012Exposure to arsenic in drinking water at the level the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) currently deems as safe in the United States (10 parts per billion) induces adverse health outcomes in pregnant and lactating mice and their offspring, concludes a study led by Joshua Hamilton of the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) and Courtney Kozul-Horvath at Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. The team is part of the Dartmouth Superfund Research Program on Toxic Metals.
Pregnant and/or breastfeeding mothers who consumed low levels (10 ppb) of arsenic in their drinking water, the scientists found, exhibited significant disruption in their lipid metabolism, leading to diminished nutrients in their blood and in their breast milk. As a result, their offspring showed significant growth and development deficits during the postnatal period before weaning. Birth outcomes such as litter size and length of gestation were unaffected.
"The pups were essentially malnourished; they were small and underdeveloped," Hamilton says. Once the pups were switched to milk from a mother who had not consumed arsenic, their growth deficits reversed, although only the males fully caught up with the pups that had had no arsenic exposure.
The U.S. EPA recently lowered the Maximum Contaminant Level for arsenic to 10 ppb in public water supplies?a regulated level that is considered "safe" for a lifetime of exposure?yet concentrations of 100 ppb and higher are commonly found in private, unregulated well water in regions where arsenic is geologically abundant, including upper New England (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine), Florida, and large parts of the Upper Midwest, the Southwest, and the Rocky Mountains.
"This study raises a couple of issues. First, we have to think again about whether 10 ppb arsenic as a U.S. drinking water standard is safe and protective of human health," says Hamilton, who is the MBL's chief academic and scientific officer and a senior scientist in the MBL Bay Paul Center.
"Second, this study reiterates an emerging idea in toxicology that pregnant women and their offspring are uniquely sensitive to chemicals in their environment," Hamilton says. "There is a special window of vulnerability for both of them." Third, says Hamilton, "If you are on a private water system, particularly in a region with high arsenic, have your water tested so that you know what you are drinking."
The levels of arsenic and other regulated chemicals in public drinking water are published by water systems and readily available to consumers. In most states, the Department of Environmental Protection or its equivalent will also test an individual's sample of private well water for arsenic and other chemicals. If the concentration of arsenic is of concern, Hamilton says, the best options for private well owners are drinking bottled water or buying a remediation system, such as reverse osmosis, that will remove arsenic. Based on this and prior studies (Environ. Hlth. Perspect. 2009), Hamilton and colleagues posit that exposure to low levels of arsenic may act as a predisposing factor, in which a second stress is needed to induce adverse health affects. In this study, pregnancy and lactation acted as that secondary stress. In the prior study, Hamilton's group demonstrated that arsenic suppressed immune function, leading to dramatically greater effects of a flu infection in mice.
Offspring are also uniquely sensitive to environmental chemicals because "they are developing rapidly. It's not hard for very low doses of a chemical to have big effects on a developing animal," Hamilton says.
In the current study, the mothers who were exposed to arsenic had significantly lower triglyceride concentrations in their serum and breast milk than normal, indicating the process of fat metabolism and storage in their bodies was compromised.
"Normally, the body is very good at storing fat and glucose for later use," Hamilton says. "Up to a certain point, if a mother is malnourished during and after pregnancy, the offspring will not be compromised, because her body uses nutrients it has stored to nourish the baby. Her body will basically 'eat itself' to provide for the baby." However, because this protective mechanism was disrupted in the arsenic-exposed mothers, they could provide less nutrients to their pups via breast milk.
The arsenic-exposed mothers also displayed a condition known as hepatic steatosis or "fatty liver," in which fat accumulates abnormally in the liver.
As early as day 10 after birth, the pups of arsenic-exposed mothers showed significant deficits in growth, as evidenced by body weight. At the typical time of weaning (21 days after birth), many of the arsenic-exposed offspring were so small that it was not feasible to separate them from their mothers.
"The message here is, 'Pay attention to your total arsenic exposure, both in drinking water and also in food.'" Hamilton says. "Pregnant women, especially, need to be very careful and protective of their health. Environmental chemicals such as arsenic, along with tobacco, alcohol, drugs?all of these chemicals are potential stressors to pregnant women and their offspring."
"The research conducted by Dr. Hamilton and Dr. Kozul-Horvath is an important component of our Superfund Research Program (SRP) at Dartmouth," says Bruce Stanton, Dartmouth SRP Director.
