Love Party Music ? Amy Winehouse home for sale

Camden villa where singer died in July 2011 is listed at ?2.7m after family deems it ?inappropriate for us to live there?

The London home where Amy Winehouse lived and died has been put up for sale by her family for ?2.7m.

Thousands of mourning fans flocked to the three-bedroom property in Camden and transformed the square where it sits into a shrine following the singer?s death last July.

Ten months later her relatives are placing the house on the market, saying it would be inappropriate for any of them to move in.

There had been rumours that the villa in Camden Square, north-west London, could be turned into the headquarters for the Amy Winehouse Foundation, a charity set up to support causes close to the singer?s heart.

The Sun reported a family spokesman as saying: ?The Winehouses have decided to put the house on the market, with great regret. Amy loved that house but none of the family felt it appropriate that they should live in it.

?It was not practical to keep it empty while paying for its upkeep. It is a wonderful place and will be a happy family home for someone.?

The property is listed at ?2,699,950 and described as a ?substantial and impressive three double bedroom, three reception room semi-detached period villa with well-proportioned private front and rear gardens.?

It has changed hands once in more than 40 years and had undergone major structural and cosmetic refurbishment, according to the website House Network.

The property has retained a number of original features with modern upgrades including new electrical and heating systems, an integrated sound system and CCTV, the sales pitch adds.

The advert shows a kitchen with a black and white chequered floor. The majority of the large rooms have been painted white and have dark wooden floors and ceiling beams.

Winehouse was 27 when her body was discovered in a bed at the property after a long battle with drink and drugs. It prompted an outpouring of emotion from fans with thousands flocking to the affluent square to lay tributes outside the singer?s gated home.

Bird-flu test identifies 10 strains of virus

As bird flu continues to evolve, accurate diagnosis of the many strains of the disease is at the top of most emergency strategies. Now the most comprehensive test yet has been developed, capable of detecting 10 strains of the H5N1 virus. The current gold standard test, recommended by the World Health Organization, can detect only three.

The H5N1 virus has killed 60 per cent of the people who have caught it worldwide. Treatments are available, but to work best they need to be taken as early as possible. That makes accurate and early diagnosis essential, says Timothy Barkham at Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore, one of the developers of the new test.

"Singapore likes to be prepared for what might happen. I now have something in my fridge which I can get out if there is an outbreak," says Barkham.

He adds that the test, which is being commercialised by Singaporean firm AITbiotech, will be licensed to other countries in south-east Asia.

Genome promises tastier tomatoes

The successful sequencing of the tomato genome will lead to tastier varieties within five years say scientists.

They believe that the elusive flavour of home grown tomatoes will by then be widely available in supermarkets.

Writing in the journal Nature, the researchers say the genetic information could reduce the need for pesticides.

The authors believe the genome will also boost conventional breeding techniques over genetic modification.

While the sheer numbers and varieties of tomatoes available in UK shops have increased substantially in the past 20 years, many consumers would complain that this growth has been at the expense of flavour.

Scientists like Professor Graham Seymour at the University of Nottingham would tend to agree.

"In the early 1990s what changed the tomato industry was the use of non-ripening mutant genes, genes that came from natural mutations that have been used to extend shelf life in the fruit.

But this has been quite a blunt instrument, because when you slow ripening down you also slow down those other processes like flavour development and colour development."

Long lasting fruit

As part of an international team of more than 300 scientists from 14 countries, Professor Seymour and his colleagues believe that the successful deciphering of the tomato genome will have a major impact on a global industry worth between $30bn and $40bn annually.

"Now that we have the genome it will be possible to actually target the genes that control flavour separately from those that control shelf life. So it should be possible in the very near future to have tomatoes that last a long time but develop a very dark red colour, are full of phyto chemicals and are much more tasty."

Another member of the team Dr Gerard Bishop from Imperial College London says the publication of the genome marks a "step change" in the way we breed tomatoes.

"Yield has been the big driver behind most of the breeding strategies and now the push is to go over to flavour. We now have the ability to breed varieties more quickly, it's going to provide us with more intricate ways of precisely breeding the varieties we really want."

And these new varieties will be on the shelves very soon according to Prof Seymour.

"I only work with a couple of companies but I know that they are putting through some of these new traits and they are going to their elite lines - but all tomato breeding companies will be taking this up now so you would expect to see a number of new products over the next 3-5 years."

However the publication of the tomato genome will raise fears in some people that scientists will now be able to tinker more easily with the genetic makeup of the fruit.

Return of GM?

Back in the early 1990s a genetically modified tomato called the Flavr Savr was the first GM crop licensed for human consumption. It was not a commercial success as public concerns over the technology eventually lead to its demise.

So will the availability of the full genetic sequence and the demand for tastier varieties revitalise the GM effort? Prof Seymour doesn't think so.

"It's very likely at the moment that it will just be better breeding through conventional techniques. The genome sequence allows us to target those gene variants in the wild species and bring them into the cultivated lines and do that relatively effectively."

Dr Gerard Bishop agrees that the knowledge gleaned from the genome will boost conventional breeding.

"It will allow us to breed more pesticide resistant varieties - And because some of the wild species come from desert locations, there are going to be genes we can breed in that will help mitigate climate change."

But will the publication of the genome shed any light on the perennial debate about whether a tomato is a fruit or a vegetable? The question gets short shrift from Professor Seymour

"It's botanically a fruit, it's a berry, that's it."

Nations Lending Streamlines VA Home Loan Program and IRRRL ...

Independence, OH (PRWEB) April 30, 2012

Nations Lending Corporation (NLC) is a qualified VA lender that originates, closes and funds VA mortgage loans in over 40 states. Nations Lending Corporation, founded in 2003, supplies home financing to veterans who want to refinance or purchase a home, manufactured home or a residential cooperative housing unit. In early 2012, NLC completed work to automate most aspects of their loan origination process by implementing new advancements in their loan origination software.

Throughout 2011, NLC focused on leveraging their technology infrastructure and integrating new web-based technologies. As a result, the time required to originate, process, close and fund VA mortgages, such as VA streamline refinance home loans has been drastically reduced. Eligible veterans, service members, certain unmarried surviving spouses, active duty personnel, reservists and National Guard members are now benefiting from streamlined VA loan and Interest Rate Reduction Refinance Loan application, approval and closing methodologies.

The Cleveland, Ohio based residential mortgage banking company is reducing the complexity that veterans encounter when purchasing a home with no money down, complying with VA cash out refinance guidelines, requesting a VA Streamline Refinance and calculating VA funding fees. Licensed mortgage bankers concisely explain VA home loan qualifications and quickly calculate VA home loan and IRRRL mortgage rates for veterans over the phone.

U.S. veterans can call Nations Lending Corporation at 866-447-0266 to check on their eligibility for the VA Home Loan Program and to apply for a VA home loan or IRRRL. By upgrading their best-in-class IT infrastructure, the business has enhanced their ability to quickly determine a veteran?s eligibility, approve, close, underwrite and fund VA home loans and IRRRLs.

Veterans are often exempt from VA funding fees if they receive VA disability compensation. The Cleveland, Ohio based VA lender uses an online Veterans Information Portal (VIP) to streamline the VA home loan process. While talking with a veteran on the phone, licensed mortgage bankers at NLC use this portal to check a disabled veteran?s qualifications to have the VA loan funding fee waived.

In the past, veterans who wanted to determine their eligibility for VA loans applied for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) by mail using the VA Form 26-1880. Now veterans can call Nations Lending Corporation at 866-447-0266 to request that the lender submit an application online on their behalf. NLC has simplified the process of establishing a veteran?s eligibility to obtain a VA Home Loan by integrating the VA?s Internet-based application, called the Web LGY system, into their loan application and approval procedures.

Since April 14, 2010, when the Department of Veterans Affairs approved Nations Lending Corporations status as a VA Automatic Lender, the company has cut down the time required to close a VA home loan or VA streamline loan. By using a standardized 1003 form and industry leading technologies, the firm has streamlined the processing procedures for VA loan applications and cash-out refinancing loans for active military personnel and armed services veterans.

The mortgage bankers at Nations Lending Corporation have received extensive training in the military service requirements for VA loan eligibility in order to reduce the time required to determine a veteran?s eligibility, shorten the loan application process, facilitate the company?s ability to efficiently close VA home loans and provide industry leading customer service. The VA lender regularly conducts continuing education classes for it?s licensed mortgage bankers so that they efficiently comply with VA income and credit standards.

Nations Lending Corporation offers VA guaranteed home loans with a variety of interest rate options. These options include an adjustable-rate mortgage with an interest rate that changes after the initial fixed-rate period (hybrid ARM) or fixed-rate loans. Veterans save money because VA loans do not require because private mortgage insurance. William L. Osborne Jr., the company C.F.O, was quoted recently, ?VA cash-out loans and IRRRLs are popular with veterans because they allow the homeowner to borrow more money with less equity and they don?t pay a monthly mortgage insurance fee.?

In the case of Interest Rate Reduction Refinancing Loans (IRRRLs), the Department of Veterans Affairs does not require Nations Lending to get an appraisal. Bankers at NLC have the expertise to roll VA funding fees, paid to the VA, into the loan amount. This option slightly increases a veteran?s monthly payment but eliminates the need for a veteran to pay the charge upfront in cash.

Documentation requirements for borrowers are less restrictive for VA IRRRL loans than with other loan programs. Nations Lending Corporation does not require a veteran to provide a certificate of eligibility (CEO) when applying for a VA IRRRL. When determining whether or not a veteran will pay a funding fee, NLC can use the VA?s e-mail confirmation procedure for interest rate reduction refinance loans, referred to as a ?Streamline? or a ?VA to VA.?

NLC is a VA lender that allows military and veteran homeowners to obtain mortgage loans up to 100% of the appraised value of the home. Veterans who have equity in their homes can take cash out of their home up to 95% (LTV) to pay off credit cards, other installment loans, home equity lines of credit, revolving debt or to take a vacation. These loan-to-values (LTV) allow eligible veterans to improve their family?s financial situation.

Nations Lending Corporation is a growing national mortgage lender specializing in lowering mortgage payments and reducing loan terms for homeowners through the VA home loan program and the HARP program (Home Affordable Refinance Program). The company?s success in the real estate finance industry inspired the firm to move their headquarters into a larger, state-of-the-art office corporate campus in Independence, Ohio in late 2011.

In 2012, NLC management launched a new Retail Mortgage Branch Program (RMBP) and the firm continues to open new retail mortgage branches across the United States. The financial institution is offering VA home loans guaranteed by the Department of Veterans Affairs through direct-to-consumer channels and its retail mortgage branches located across the United States.

The company is recommending that veterans who want to refinance their home or purchase a home, take advantage of the federal benefits provided to veterans, dependents and survivors through VA home loan guaranties. Veterans should call 866-447-0266 to talk to a mortgage banker licensed in their state to discuss loan options, interest rates and to apply for a VA loan or IRRRL. More information is provided on the Nations Lending Corporation web site at https://www.nlcmortgageloans.com/vahomeloans.

Japanese carrier to sell smartphones with radiation detectors

Mobile phone operator Softbank Corp said on Tuesday it would soon begin selling smartphones with radiation detectors, tapping into concerns that atomic hotspots remain along Japan's eastern coast more than a year after the Fukushima crisis.

Parts of northeastern Japan are still off-limits due to high radiation levels after the Fukushima nuclear plant was devastated by a huge earthquake and tsunami, triggering meltdowns and spewing radiation.

Anti-nuclear sentiment is high, with advocacy groups in Tokyo and other cities calling for radiation monitoring at schools and other public facilities.

"The threat from the nuclear accident cannot be seen by the human eye and continues to be a concern for many people, especially for mothers with small children," said Softbank founder and president, Masayoshi Son, standing in front of an aerial photo of the crippled plant.

The smartphone in the company's "Pantone" series will come in eight bright colors and include customized IC chips made by Sharp Corp that measure radiation levels in microsieverts per hour.

The phone, which goes on sale this summer, can also keep track of each location a user tests for radiation levels.

Son, who emerged as an outspoken critic of nuclear power and advocate of renewable energy sources after last year's quake, told vendors and reporters that the smartphone was more portable and user-friendly than conventional Geiger counters.

Softbank, Japan's No. 3 mobile phone operator, has not set a price on the new smartphone yet, but Son told reporters after the event that it would be in an affordable price range.

APNewsBreak: FEMA trailer litigation nears end

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? A class-action settlement agreement has been reached to resolve nearly all the remaining court claims over allegations that government-issued trailers exposed Gulf Coast residents to hazardous fumes after Hurricane Katrina, a lead plaintiffs' attorney said Monday.

In a court filing late Monday, plaintiffs' lawyers and several companies that manufactured FEMA trailers after the 2005 storm asked U.S. District Judge Kurt Engelhardt to approve an expanded version of a multimillion-dollar deal initially announced in April.

A separate agreement with four FEMA contractors that installed or refurbished trailers will be filed Tuesday, lead plaintiffs' attorney Gerald Meunier told The Associated Press.

Nearly two dozen FEMA trailer makers agreed last month to pay a total of $14.8 million to resolve claims over elevated formaldehyde levels in FEMA trailers following hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Monday's expanded settlement agreement includes claims against trailer manufacturers Gulf Stream Coach Inc., Forest River Inc., Jayco Inc. and Monaco Coach Corp. Representatives of the four companies didn't immediately respond to emails seeking comment.

FEMA contractors Shaw Environmental Inc., Bechtel Corp., Fluor Enterprises Inc. and CH2M Hill Constructors Inc. also have reached agreements with the plaintiffs' lawyers, according to Meunier.

The amount of money that would be paid by each of the eight companies wasn't immediately disclosed.

Residents of Louisiana, Texas, Alabama and Mississippi who lived in FEMA trailers after the 2005 hurricanes are eligible to participate.

Engelhardt is expected to hold a fairness hearing on the proposed settlement on Sept. 27. If he approves the deal, a group of Texas residents' claims against the Federal Emergency Management Agency would be the only formaldehyde-related claims that haven't been settled or dismissed by the judge, Meunier said.

Meunier estimates that roughly 60,000 plaintiffs could benefit from the entire settlement. He said the deal is a "positive development" for residents even if the amount of compensation is lower than many had anticipated when the case started nearly five years ago.

"But I think the outcome here reflects the realities of the case," Meunier said.

Meunier said the plaintiffs' lawyers tested a sample of FEMA trailers but couldn't test every unit occupied by every plaintiff.

"I think that presented a challenge," he said. "It was our belief that to go on trying thousands of cases with that kind of challenge in presenting the evidence ... was not going to be a very satisfactory alternative for the clients."

Daniel Balhoff, a court-appointed mediator who helped broker the proposed settlement with FEMA trailer makers, said in a court filing Monday that he believes the deal is "fair, adequate and reasonable."

"The plaintiffs are faced with significant burden of proof issues with respect to causation," he said. "For many plaintiffs, the manufactured home no longer exists or can no longer be located. Further, many individual plaintiffs faced causation problems due to the fact that they were smokers or had independent bases separate from formaldehyde exposure for their health issues."

Formaldehyde, a chemical commonly found in building materials, can cause breathing problems and is classified as a carcinogen. Government tests on hundreds of trailers in Louisiana and Mississippi found formaldehyde levels that were, on average, about five times what people are exposed to in most modern homes.

FEMA, which isn't a party in the settlement, downplayed formaldehyde risks for months before those test results were announced in February 2008. As early as 2006, trailer occupants began reporting headaches, nosebleeds and difficulty breathing.

The federal agency provided trailers or mobile homes to more than 144,000 families after the hurricanes. Plaintiffs' lawyers have accused the trailer makers of using shoddy building materials and methods in a rush to meet the agency's unprecedented demand for temporary housing.

In October 2007, Engelhardt was picked to oversee hundreds of consolidated lawsuits and tens of thousands of related claims. Since then, the case has generated more than 25,000 docket entries and resulted in three trials for individual claims. The juries in all three trials sided with the companies and didn't award any damages.

The settlement isn't the first in the litigation. Last year, a group of companies that manufactured mobile homes for FEMA after Katrina agreed to pay $2.6 million to resolve thousands of related claims. Mobile homes are larger and sturdier than travel trailers, which housed the majority of storm victims and are more prone to elevated levels of formaldehyde.

Fleetwood Enterprises Inc., which supplied FEMA with travel trailers before it filed for bankruptcy in 2009, agreed in 2010 to a settlement resolving about 7,500 to 8,000 claims. Terms of that deal weren't disclosed.

Engelhardt dismissed claims against FEMA by residents of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Plaintiffs' attorneys have asked the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans to overturn Engelhardt's dismissal of the Louisiana claims. The appeals court previously upheld his dismissal of the Mississippi and Alabama claims.

A Beautiful Day | Souvenirs of Fatherhood

We settled into the silence and enjoyed our dinner together as a family, but so much had gone into that moment.

The food had just come ?fresh? out of the microwave, since it had sat on the kitchen table too long and cooled down. ?The few tiny drops of rain that fell before dinner had now stopped, mocking me for all of my panic, and leaving a somewhat damp, somewhat crisp feeling in the air. ?The spotty rain was visible only on my t-shirt, and so was the humid 90 degree heat that preceded the rain. ?I came in from outside and joined Erica in the kitchen. ?It was finally time to eat.

When Erica had pulled into the driveway only moments before, she was greeted by one screaming crying kid and another overly concerned big sister. ?I stuck my head out of the tent that was still set up in the backyard to explain, ?That one is fresh, I don?t know what he?s crying about now, but it?s not related to the phone call earlier.? She replied with a quizzical, ?What are you doing in the tent?? the rest of her sentence I?m sure was to be, ??when there is a kid crying in the house?? but to her credit, she didn?t ask the second part, and I may have just assumed it. ?Still, I felt I had to justify myself by explaining that it?was?raining just a few minutes ago and I didn?t want all of their sleeping stuff to be wet for tonight. ?I think I actually used the word ?thunderstorming? which was stretching the truth.

Before she came home, she called me to tell me that she would be very late. ?Even though she was told to pick up the cake at 6:00 the bakery was closed. ?She was waiting for a manager to come and open it up to give her the cake for the preschool graduation ceremony the next day. ?I begged her to hurry home.

I lifted up the bottom edge of my t-shirt to wipe the sweat dripping off my brow. ?I had felt a raindrop earlier and so I jumped up from the picnic blanket and rushed the kids and all the food back into the house, before running out again to grab their gear.

But before that one solitary fateful drop of rain, Pax, Ella and I were all laying on the picnic blanket taking turns applying an ice pack to our foreheads. ?It started as a way to be silly so that Pax would let me put the ice on his forehead, which worked a couple of times but mostly just helped to distract him from the shock of what just happened.

I had seen it all unfold in slow motion. ?He stood up to get out of the pool and the first foot he lifted to try to put over the pool?s edge caught the very tip of his toes at the top of the pool, sending his hands high in the air and toppling him face first onto the driveway. ?I rushed over and rinsed him off to see what the damage was. ?By his crying I thought we would have to make a trip to the emergency room. ?Once I could see the small scrape where the blood was coming from, amidst the black and blue mark on his forehead, I knew we could handle it at home. ?I sat him on the blanket and got him a towel from the house and immediately dialed his mommy.

Meanwhile, Ella yelled to me from the swimming pool asking to get out. ?Erica called my phone again but I had to let it go to voicemail. ?The ribs were still on the grill cooking, the corn cobs in the house were still boiling and then Ella called again to me with her final plea of, ?I have to go potty? which at first, caught me off guard. ?My initial reaction was that she was in a pool, and I gave it a low priority, but after more of her persistence, I left Pax with instructions to hold the ice pack to his head and took Ella in the house to help her get out of her swimsuit and make it in time.

Erica had just called a few minutes before with a status report telling me that she would be a few minutes late because it seems the store was having problems with their photo printing station.

I can still see me now, the trimmed meat searing on the grill, the smell of smoke and barbecue filling the air. ?I said hello to an old friend and simultaneously handled disputes from the pool with a wave of my hand. ?Erica left with the promise that she would be back soon. ?The sun was shining and the clouds were a brilliant white against a bright blue. ?It was a beautiful day. ?At this point, all I heard was some thunder in the distance. ?I was clueless as to everything that was about to transpire around me. ?I actually thought we would make it out unscathed and that Erica would arrive home just in time to sit down and enjoy a nice Memorial Day picnic with the family.

Now, as we sat inside around the kitchen table and looked out the window at the grey skies, the comfortable silence was a welcomed reminder of all the fun we had starting even the night before and how tired we all must be. And that it was still a beautiful day together.

Prototype iPad sells for $10,200 on eBay

15 hrs.

An early prototype of the iPad with a surprising design quirk has sold for just?over $10,000 on eBay. The device features two dock connection ports, something that was rumored for the iPad 2. Unfortunately, the novelty of the two ports will be somewhat dampened by the fact that this iPad only runs a testing platform called Switchboard instead of iOS.

As the seller describes it:

This is one of a VERY small amount of Apple prototype devices and you rarely see these on ebay. This iPad has 16GBs of capacity, and is incredibly unique?...?Apple prototyped these iPads to have this connector late in the process and at the last minute decided to remove them. There are patent drawings and leaked casings that show the indents for both dock connector holes, but this unit has both dock connectors, and both are full functional for charging this iPad and connecting it to your computer.

There were certainly rumors to the effect that a new iPad would have two ports, and as the seller notes there were actually leaked cases and drawings that showed this design. This particular iPad, however, is the first actual device to show up with the ports intact.

Whether Apple indeed intended to include both ports up until "the last minute" is anyone's guess, though it seems unlikely that Steve Jobs and Jonathan Ive, both decisive and minimalistic in their design tendencies, would allow such an ambiguity into a shipping product.

It is, however, possible and even likely that the decision of which side the dock would be on was left until the last minute, as the device is equally usable in both landscape and portrait modes. They settled?on portrait as the primary orientation, clearly, mirroring the iPhone and differentiating the iPad from widescreen monitors and TVs.

Interestingly, as a commenter points out at MacRumours, which found the listing, the circuitry necessary for the second dock connector is still present in normal iPads, though there is no hole in the case through which it can be accessed.

The real question, of course, is how did this device get out of Apple's labs in the first place? The seller tells Wired: "Judging by how Apple works, it?s most likely stolen, but I?m not sure about that...?I can?t give much information about the Apple device without revealing who specifically I am." That may put this auction in questionable legal territory.

Regardless, the package is already in the open, in transit?to the US-based buyer. Apple may try to track it down, but this cat is already out of the bag.

The Faster-Than-Light Telegraph That Wasn't

Web Exclusives | More Science

In 1981 physicist Nick Herbert leveraged strange features of quantum mechanics to design a superluminal communication system. The quest to uncover its subtle flaw led to a profound new understanding of the quantum world

Herbert's FLASH system?the acronym stood for "first laser-amplified superluminal hookup"?employed a source that emitted pairs of photons in opposite directions. The scheme focused on photons' polarization?that is, the directions along which their associated electric fields oscillated. The photons could be plane-polarized, with the electric fields oscillating either horizontally (H) or vertically (V). Or the photons could be circularly polarized, with the electric fields tracing out helical patterns in either a right-handed (R) or left-handed (L) orientation.

Physicists had long known that the two flavors of polarization?plane or circular?were intimately related. Plane-polarized light could be used to create circularly polarized light, and vice versa. For example, a beam of H-polarized light consisted of equal parts R- and L-polarized light, in a particular combination, just as a beam of R-polarized light could be broken down into equal parts H and V. Likewise for individual photons: a photon in state R, for example, could be represented as a special combination of states H and V. If one prepared a photon in state R but chose to measure plane rather than circular polarization, one would have an equal probability of finding H or V: a single-particle version of Schr?dinger?s cat.

In Herbert's imagined set-up, one physicist, Alice ("Detector A" in the illustration), could choose to measure either plane or circular polarization of the photon headed her way [1]. If she chose to measure plane polarization, she would measure H and V outcomes with equal probability. If she chose to measure circular polarization, she would find R and L outcomes with equal probability.

In addition, Alice knows that because of the nature of the source of photons, each photon she measures has an entangled twin moving toward her partner, Bob. Quantum entanglement means that the two photons behave like two sides of a coin: if one is measured to be in state R, then the other must be in state L; or if one is measured in state H, the other must be in state V. The kicker, according to Bell's theorem, is that Alice's choice of which type of polarization to measure (plane or circular) should instantly affect the other photon, streaming toward Bob [2]. If she chose to measure plane polarization and happened to get the result H, then the entangled photon heading toward Bob would enter the state V instantaneously. If she had chosen instead to measure circular polarization and found the result R, then the entangled photon instantly would have entered the state L.

Next came Herbert's special twist. Before the second photon made its way to Bob's detectors, it entered a laser gain tube [3]. Lasers had been around for 20 years by that time, and as the leading textbooks routinely touted, the output from a laser had the same polarization as the input signal. That suggested that the laser should release a burst of photons in the complementary state to whatever Alice had found at her side. Bob could then split the beam [4], sending half toward a detector to measure plane polarization [5] and half toward a detector to measure circular polarization [6].

If Alice chose to measure circular polarization and happened to find L, then the entangled photon heading toward Bob would instantly go into the state R prior to entering the laser gain tube. Out of the laser would burst a stream of R photons heading toward Bob. He could then send half the beam toward a detector to measure plane polarization and half toward a detector to measure circular polarization. In this case, Herbert concluded, Bob would find half the photons in state R, none in state L, and a quarter each in states H and V. In an instant, Bob would know that Alice had chosen to measure circular polarization. Alice's choice?plane or circular polarization?would function like the dots and dashes of Morse code. She could signal Bob simply by alternating her choice of what type of polarization to measure. Bob could decode each bit of Alice?s code faster than light could have traveled between them.

As GianCarlo Ghirardi, Tullio Weber, Wojciech Zurek, Bill Wootters and Dennis Dieks each clarified, Herbert?s device would not actually allow superluminal signaling. A photon in state R, for example, would exist as a combination of equal parts H and V. Each of those underlying states would be amplified by the laser. Hence the output would be a superposition of two states: one in which all the photons were in state H, and the other in which all the photons were in state V, each with a probability of 50 percent. Bob would never find half in H and half in V at the same time, just as physicists would never find Schr?dinger's cat to be both half-dead and half-alive upon opening the box. Thus, Bob would receive only noise no matter what setting Alice had chosen on her end. Moment by moment, Bob's detectors would flash H with R or V with L or H with L and so on, in random combinations. He would never find H and V with R, and hence he would have no way to determine what Alice had been trying to tell him. Quantum entanglement and relativity could coexist after all.

This discovery became known as the "no-cloning theorem": a powerful statement about the ultimate foundations of quantum theory. An arbitrary or unknown quantum state cannot be copied without disturbing the original state. No one had ever recognized that fundamental feature of quantum theory before the cat-and-mouse game had unfolded between Nick Herbert's thought experiment and his talented detractors. The fact that quantum theory sets an ultimate limit on the ability of anyone?including a potential eavesdropper?to seize individual quantum particles and make copies of them soon became the bedrock for quantum encryption, and today is at the heart of the flourishing field of quantum information science.

Google unveils the new app-driven ChromeOS (and its new hardware)

Chromebook and Chromebox

Google is showing off a shiny new Samsung Chromebook and the new Chromebox today, which come to the table not only with beefier specs but with an all-new user interface. For those who aren't familiar, ChromeOS is a new computer operating system from Google, one where everything runs inside a Chrome browser and from the cloud. It's a concept well-received by many, hated by just as many, but leaves most folks wondering why.

The first consumer Chromebooks came out last year, and their anemic hardware and high price tag overshadowed their main selling points -- a Chromebook is the ultimate multi-user system, as all your data is stored in the cloud and accessible when you log in with your Google account. When you shut it down, nothing is saved locally and the devices is ready for the next user. As long as you have a constant connection to the Internet (and use Google's services) they are a perfect web-machine. A couple of us here at AC use them, and they come in handy when you don't want (or need) to log in to a "real" computer for a few minutes work.

Today's news makes them a bit more attractive. The hardware has been revamped and now the system runs on an Intel dual-core Sandy Bridge Celeron processor with 4GB of RAM. This should offer up quite the performance boost, but we're curious how it affects the battery life. They look like something we want to try.

Most importantly (and the reason why we're as curious as we are) is the new software. ChromeOS version 19 is now live and stable for the new gear, and with it comes an entirely new UI. Instead of just the single browser window ChromeOS offered in the past, you now have a home screen, a system tray and notification area, and shortcuts to commonly used apps in place. Yes, apps -- Google is placing a new focus on the Chrome appstore, and the wonders of webapps (hello there, Enyo team!). We've been using the beta version of v19 for a while now, and to us, things look and feel a lot like an Android tablet. I even find myself touching the screen to try and launch things like the GMail app.

Could this be the first step to a true convergence of ChromeOS and Android? At one time Google told us that the two will never meet, but we've already seen Chrome Browser for Android, and many think a Chromium, open-sourced version will become the default browser. We expect to hear more about ChromeOS, and any potential future with Android at Google I/O in just a month.

Instant View: RIM enlists JPMorgan, RBC in review, warns of loss

(Reuters) - Blackberry-maker Research in Motion, which has steadily ceded market share to Apple Inc and Google Inc in the hotly contested global smartphone arena, has hired JP Morgan and RBC Capital Markets to help review its struggling business.

The company, which some analysts say may try to put itself up for sale, expects to post an operating loss in the current quarter.

Commentary:

ED SNYDER, ANALYST, CHARTER EQUITY RESEARCH

"RIM is on the downward slope and its going to get steeper. The new management is rightly evaluating all the alternatives to try to stave off what will inevitably be greater losses.

"I don't think anybody's going to buy them so much as split up the company. Jim Balsillie left because he was proposing splitting the company into hardware and software.

"You're not going to sell RIM whole. The most valuable part of RIM today is the server business. The hardware business is a mess and probably going to get worse.

"The biggest problem RIM faces is that it's a very illiquid market in suitors for its phone business. There's very few companies that could exploit RIM's (hardware) assets to make a go of it. Those who can are already beating the pants off RIM.

"On the services side, you could see Microsoft picking that up, or Apple or even Samsung. Anybody who wants a stronger base in the enterprise."

DANIEL ERNST, ANALYST, HUDSON SQUARE RESEARCH

"The layoffs are not new. The most interesting thing that came out of that press release is that they are going to have a loss in some operations. That's certainly below our expectations and below the Street.

"In the broader scheme of things it's not a surprise. RIM is stuck between a rock and a hard place right now. On the high end they're getting crushed by Apple. At the low end they are getting crushed by Android. In overseas markets where you can get a $100 Android phone, it does Web browsing, email and apps. It may not be a great phone but it does all these modern things we're used to.

"RIM doesn't have a product at the high end and doesn't have a product at the bottom end. Meanwhile their core corporate customers have been slowly churning out to Apple. They have a lot of work cut for them.

"RIM's core issue is their product. It doesn't matter how much they cut costs or how many bankers they hire if it doesn't have a product to sell. "

SCOTT SUTHERLAND, ANALYST, WEDBUSH SECURITIES

"They need to take a long hard look at themselves. As long as they stick with this integrated strategy, they'll always be playing catch-up but never get to where Apple and others are. At the end of the day, being an integrated business will go the way of Palm. They really need to rethink how to become part of a bigger ecosystem.

"They have a lot of tangible assets, they have their patent portfolio, they have the enterprise mobility platform and they have the device business. In their integration of all that they're so far behind, I just think sticking to that, maybe you have a long slow death. By separating those units, I think you can get some value off the different pieces.

"Nokia has shown how to do it right. They're going to take a lot of pain over at Nokia, but they've made the tough decision to become part of a larger ecosystem."

JOHN JACKSON, ANALYST, CCS INSIGHT

"By engaging the bankers, you just have that elevated possibility of strategic action. Nothing strategic happens until you hire the bankers.

"RIM has assets that might be valuable to various parties broken up, they might be valuable collectively. I think there are quite a number of plausible scenarios out there, not the least of which is still an organic recovery. I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that they can't restructure effectively.

"It is clear that the investment community has lost patience with RIM and that is going to weigh on their ability to recover organically.

"There is zero surprise in the matter that RIM is guiding toward on operating loss this quarter, and that they're going to continue to have a tough time - no real surprises there.

"The collective assets that comprise BB10 are formidable and I think the market overlooks that.

"The market has perhaps been a little bit myopic in not appreciating the extent to which those assets look like the future."

EHUD GELBLUM, ANALYST, MORGAN STANLEY

"Bankers do a lot more than buy and sell, certainly finding a buyer is one the things they do, but in this case it would be an option of last resort.

The bankers "are there to help them restructure, from outsourcing pieces of it, selling divisions etcetera so that the cost structure will come down.

"They will be a much, much smaller company. They have to bring down the cost structure in a hurry so they don't get to the point that they go bankrupt until they have a new product. Is there a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow? The odds are definitely against them.

"They could have the best product but the way the market has developed - set up for Android and iOS and maybe Microsoft - it's really hard to see it would be receptive for a fourth."

MICHAEL JAMES, SENIOR TRADER, WEDBUSH MORGAN, LOS ANGELES

"Clearly a big disappointment. I can't say it's going to take people completely by surprise from a trader standpoint, but the magnitude of the miss: they didn't quantify it, they just said it's going to be an operating loss. And the consensus estimate for the quarter is 41 cents, so you know it's going to be at least 42 cents below estimates.

"I don't think it's a surprise that guidance is being lowered, but I think the magnitude of the disappointment below estimates is definitely a negative surprise.

"They did say that they hired JP Morgan and RBC to evaluate options, so that might be a potential saving grace for the stock. I don't think any options are off the table, whether it be licensing their proprietary software or putting the company completely up for sale.

"It is further validation that the iPhone and Android are continuing to dominate the smartphone space, and you are seeing the clear losers being RIM and Nokia."

ALEX GAUNA, ANALYST, JMP

"We were all anticipating this anyway. But there isn't a lot of detail around it. How deep is the loss?

"They're clearly moving in the wrong direction right now, so I found it a little frustrating that there wasn't more detail. It wasn't as helpful as it could have been.

"If they're really trying to repair their relationship with Wall Street and investors, this was not all that helpful."

COLIN GILLIS, ANALYST, BGC PARTNERS

"Everyone talks about the transition, but in order to have a transition, you need to have something to transition to.

"We're not even at the point where this is a transition, this is just a downward slope right now.

"They're talking about (Blackberry) 10, but 10 is going to be in the back half of the year... That's also part of it."

MARK MCKECHNIE, ANALYST, THINKEQUITY LLC

"Clearly its a special situation stock. It's having trouble competing with Android and Apple for the No.3 place.

"We're looking at this as a salvage, value type situation. The valuable assets in RIM are cash on the balance sheet, the recurring enterprise software revenue, and their patents.

"When I talk about RIM's valuation I talk about $10 per share for the value of their patents."

Despite downgrade, Beryl still soaks Memorial Day

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) ? Joyce Connolly and her daughters left their home in Hurricane, W.Va., to head south for a Memorial Day beach vacation ? and ended up in the center of Tropical Storm Beryl.

While it left little damage after sweeping ashore with 70 mph winds around midnight Monday at Jacksonville, Fla., the storm still wrecked much of Connolly's trip. She skipped a graduation because powerful winds kept her and her daughters from venturing past the beach boardwalk when the storm approached Sunday. And she postponed their drive home Monday as Beryl, downgraded to a tropical depression, continued to dump rain near the Georgia-Florida state line.

"It definitely changed our vacation to unfortunate circumstances that we're not happy with. But you just have to live with it," said Connolly, who at least found the irony of her hometown's name "pretty funny."

Beach trips, backyard barbecues and graveside Memorial Day observances got a good soaking in southeastern Georgia and northern Florida.

Beach lifeguards turned swimmers away from the ocean because of dangerous rip currents from Jacksonville to Tybee Island, Georgia's largest public beach 140 miles to the north. Skip Sasser, who oversees the island's lifeguards as its fire chief, said beach traffic was unusually thin for a holiday. The ocean was declared off-limits to swimmers for a second day in a row.

"It's been raining intermittently, so it's chased a lot of them off," Sasser said. "There was a lot of traffic this morning heading westbound out of Tybee."

Veterans groups, meanwhile, soldiered on with outdoor Memorial Day ceremonies despite the grim forecast.

At Savannah's historic Bonaventure Cemetery, American Legion members worked through a downpour to make sure its plot reserved for veterans had a small American flag planted by each headstone.

"When we were setting up, I had a different shirt on and I got soaked to the skin. My socks and my underwear probably are too," said Jim Grismer, commander of American Legion Post 135 in Savannah. "I had so many people trying to talk me into moving it inside. But I said then you can't have the live firing salute and the flag raising."

The rain paused just as a crowd of about 100 people began arriving. Robert Schulz, an 80-year-old who served in the Marines in the Korean War, held a folded umbrella in one hand as he saluted with the other during the service. Schulz said he and his wife briefly considered skipping the ceremony for the first time in 10 years.

"I said it would be terrible if nobody showed up," Barbara Schulz said. "We had to come for our veterans."

Aside from ruining holiday plans, the rain was welcome on the Georgia coast for bringing some relief from persistent drought. According to the state climatologist's office, as of May 1, rainfall in Savannah was 15 inches below normal for the past 12 months.

Emergency officials said minor flooding was reported near the coast, but the ground was quickly soaking up the water. And the winds had died down considerably.

"We've needed it for a long time," said Ray Parker, emergency management director for coastal McIntosh County south of Savannah, who said the worst damage came by trees falling on two homes overnight. "We were lucky that we didn't get 3 to 4 inches in 30 minutes. Most of it soaked right in before it had a chance to run off. It fell on an empty sponge."

The rainfall stopped in Savannah and other northern parts of the Georgia coast Monday afternoon, but more was expected through Tuesday. A frontal system moving south from the Great Lakes is expected to cause the storm do a U-turn and push it back out to sea.

Despite gray skies and puddles among the cobblestones on Savannah's downtown riverfront, Ruth Laino and Pat Walton waited on a park bench to board a ferry boat for an hour-long river cruise. They said only one rain burst interrupted their trip so far but they were on a covered tour trolley.

"We have our rain ponchos in our bags, so we're prepared," said Walton. "It could have been really nice and really hot. The breeze makes it more comfortable."

Georgia Power reported about 2,900 coastal customers without power Monday morning, but that number dropped to 1,300 by afternoon. Jacksonville city officials say 20,000 were without power and bus service was canceled because of so many flooded roads, downed power lines and trees.

Streets in Jacksonville Beach were unusually vacant. Bands of blinding rain alternated with dry conditions.

Taylor Anderson, captain of Jacksonville Beaches' American Red Cross Volunteer Lifesaving Corps, said he was coordinating safety procedures with local government officials. The beach was closed, but before it was on Sunday, lifeguards over and over again had to warn people to get out of the water, he said.

"Now that the storm's finally onshore and people can see that it's so dangerous and the winds and the current are up, people are lot more hesitant to go in, more so than yesterday," Anderson said.

In northeast Florida, several Memorial Day events were canceled, including one honoring veterans at the St. Augustine National Cemetery and a parade in Palatka.

"I don't mean to sound mushy, but today is Memorial Day and I hate that it ruined some plans," said Glynn County, Ga., emergency management director Jay Wiggins. "But that's just the nature of the weather."

Beryl was expected to bring 4 to 8 inches of rain to parts, with some areas getting as much as a foot. Forecasters said the storm surge and high tide could bring 2 to 4 feet of flooding in northeastern Florida and Georgia, and 1 to 2 feet in southern South Carolina.

As they left the Savannah cemetery, 76-year-old Army veteran Byron Stephens and his wife, Marilyn, said they were determined to attend the Memorial Day ceremony regardless of the weather.

"It didn't stop people from fighting in inclement weather," Marilyn Stephens said. "This is what Memorial Day is all about."

The Rare Side Effects Of Using Botox | Honest Reviews Online

There are risks associated with any medical procedure. Botox is FDA approved and has been used successfully on over 11 million men and women. As is the case with any medical treatment, there is always the possibility adverse side effects, ranging from mild irritations to severe complications.

There are risks associated with any medical procedure. Botox is FDA approved and has been used successfully on over 11 million men and women. However, as is the case with any medical treatment, there is always the possibility of an adverse side effect, ranging from mild irritations to severe complications, even death.

Botox: What is it?

Botox is a prescription medicine that is injected directly into the muscles of the face in order to reduce the overall appearance of fine lines, wrinkles around the eyes and mouth as well as the deeper groves often found on the forehead. It is a simple, relatively painless procedure in which the medicine blocks the nerve impulses to the underlying muscles that cause said wrinkles and lines. Botox produces amazing results. Instant results. Dramatic results.

It is safe. The FDA says so. 11 million satisfied users say so. There is, however, always a risk of side effects and every patient needs to be aware.

Botulism

The medical name for Botox is botulinum toxin. It is the toxin that causes botulism in large enough doses. For this application the dose is miniscule, controlled and harmless. In fact, the toxin is sterilized before injection, meaning that it is no longer living prior to use and the risk of contracting botulism is very low. Medical treatments are readily available to fight botulism, which is most often contracting from eating spoiled, improperly preserved food products. The symptoms to watch out for are:

? Double vision
? Slurred speech
? Difficulty talking
? Difficulty swallowing
? General muscle weakness
? Facial paralysis
? Trouble Walking
? Loss of bladder control
? Trouble breathing

The above symptoms are serious, regardless of the cause, and require immediate medical attention.

What Else Can Happen?

Breathing and swallowing problems can occur if the muscles used in conjunction with breathing and/or swallowing become unintentionally affected by Botox. Other more common side effects that you may experience are:
? Cotton mouth, dry mouth
? Slight discomfort or continued irritation at the site of the injection
? Temporary bruising
? General fatigue
? Neck pain or stiffness
? Dry eyes
? Headache
? Itching
? Wheezing
? Any asthma or asthma-like symptoms
? Dizziness
? Red welts

Who Shouldn?t you Use Botox?

There are a few individuals that shouldn?t use Botox for a variety of reasons. It can be a disappointment, but your overall health is more important. Your physician also has a slew of other products and procedures at their disposal that they can discuss with you in greater depth in person.

You should not use Botox injections if:
? You know that you are allergic to Botox or one of the main ingredients in Botox.
? You have had an adverse allergic reaction to Botox in the past.
? The skin in and around the planned injection site is irritated or infected.
? You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are breast-feeding.
? You have had Botox within the last four months.
? You have recently taken any prescribed or over-the-counter medication including antibiotics via injection, muscle relaxants, allergy medicine, cold medicine or sleeping medicine.
? You have breathing problems including emphysema and asthma.
? You have swallowing problems.
? You have any disease that affects the muscles and/or nerves. Lou Gehrig?s disease is an example of this.
? You have a history of bleeding problems.
? You have had a previous surgery on your face, for any reason.
? You have any weaknesses in your face, including droopy eyelids or difficulty raising your eyebrows.
? You have any type of surgery scheduled, including dental.
? Any recent sudden or strange changes to your facial appearance.

You should be certain to disclose any and all of the above to your physician before undertaking botox treatments, as well as any reactions you may experience afterward. If you?re one of the rare individuals that suffers botox side effects, there can be serious complications.

But nonprofits are a little more trouble when the money and operations start to cross our borders. The IRS?s concern is that it?s easy to use insufficiently supervised overseas entities or operations to shelter income ? by making tax -deductible donations from US income that, instead of being dedicated to a public and charitable purpose, find their way back into private pockets.

?

?

As with a for-profit company, one way to avoid some of the restrictions can be to establish the business in a new jurisdiction. Someone operating a foreign charity asked for some advice about incorporating a foreign nonprofit in the US.?

?

First off, a few critical questions:?

  1. Is there a foreign charity already in existence? Does it meet US rules about no private benefits?
  2. Is the goal of this exercise merely to solicit US donations that will be ax-deductible to donors?
  3. If the goal is indeed to form a new US charity, is that entity going to operate in the US or in the foreign country, or will it merely channel funds to the foreign organization?

?

Why do these questions matter??Donations to non-US charities are deductible only under specified circumstances. Grants by US charities are scrutinized under similar rules; foreign ?operations? by US charities are more flexible because the charity is subject to the same rules that govern its use of funds domestically.

?

A second way to approach the issue is to just solve the donation deductibility problem for the particular organization and operations (both must be compliant).?I recently answered a question about how to make?US-source donations?to an international nonprofit.?

?

In terms of straight funneling of money, Paypal is probably the easiest way, with a strong global web presence. If the question, however, is how to preserve the deductible nature of the donation for US taxpayers, then it?s a bit more complicated.

?

Certain foreign nonprofits are okay by US standards, and they can be found in?Pub. 78. There are also special rules for certain Canadian and Mexican charities. Many US nonprofits operate programs in other countries either on their own or through properly supervised/reviewed programs. If one of those channels is available, it?s preferable (at least in terms of being easier) from a fundraising perspective.

?

Finally, a US organization can go through the process of qualifying a foreign organization based on rules and procedures set out by the IRS. It?s complicated under the best scenarios and complicated because the legal status of organizations is sometimes very different in other countries.

?

This qualification is not a mere paperwork drill; you should expect to conduct actual investigation and inquiries covering what actually happens in the foreign operations.
