(AP) ? The appointment of Luxembourg's top banker to a top post at the European Central Bank left it looking a lot like an Old Boys' Club on Friday.

After the European Union leaders picked Yves Mersch in the dead of night Thursday, overriding the objections of its parliament, it left the ECB executive board with six men out of six, and an all-male 23-strong governing council.

"EU heads of state also insulted half of the population of Europe made up of women by suggesting that there is no one suitable to occupy such a senior banking role," said Guy Verhofstadt, the leader of the liberal ALDE group in parliament.

And even though President Francois Hollande backed Mersch for the post, he promised that France would change its ways.

"I make the commitment that for all the upcoming appointments, France will have special attention to balance," Hollande said after the EU summit.

Mersch's appointment to the board was originally blocked in October by the European Parliament to protest the lack of women among the ECB's top executives.

No one has disputed Mersch's suitability for the role, but the appointment stands in stark contrast to efforts made by the EU to bring more women into leading roles in business and politics ? moves that have included proposing 40 percent quotas for the boards of publicly traded companies.

"The family photo of the ECB looks as absurdly anachronistic as that of the ruling presidium of the Chinese communist party," Verhofstadt said.

The heads of government were within their rights to overrule the EU Parliament. Spain was the only nation among the 27 to oppose the appointment.

"This is not a good step," said European Parliament President Martin Schulz.

However other members of Parliament argued that, with the three-year financial crisis gripping Europe, this was no time for gender niceties. The ECB is confronting a heavy workload during the eurozone debt crisis, with missions to verify bailed-out countries' compliance with their loan agreements.

"Quality must take precedence over sex ratio and discussion," said Werner Langen of the EVP Christian Democrat group.

Mersch was nominated by European governments after extensive political horse-trading over the spot vacated when Jose Manuel Gonzalez-Paramo's term expired May 31. The seat has been vacant since then.

It was the second time in as many months that gender balance in boardrooms took center stage at the EU. A proposal to make more women on the boards of European companies mandatory had to be watered down to gain approval of the full European Commission. It still needs the approval of the Parliament and the Council, which is composed of the 27 EU heads of state and government ? the same group that approved Mersch this time.

Since it started in 1999, the ECB has had one woman on its board ? Gertrude Tumpel-Gugerell, whose term ended in May 2011. There are no women among the 17 national central bank heads who, together with the executive board, make up the 23-member rate-setting council.

There is overall backing for better gender balance in the EU's most powerful financial institution, from ECB President Mario Draghi to EU President Herman Van Rompuy. But for too many the timing was wrong.

After the summit decision, it could be 2018 before a vacancy on the ECB board comes open again.

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Then on-demand movies became the norm from cable channels, and the spread of broadband made online streaming video common from companies like Amazon and the various television networks. The Internet also undermined computer games and audio books, which were also once part of their business. Video stores' overhead costs like rent and salaries became too much. In Milford, small independents like CinemaScope and giants like Blockbuster fell by the ...

kimmosy: richa_sharam: The Logic Police: My plea to not vote for ...

This is a separation of church and state blog with an atheist slant and pro-religious education stance.? I like critical thinking, logic (hence the name), and not letting people get away with either stupid ideas or ideas that get played out in public but only serve the people making them.? With the presidential election just a day a away, I am (like everyone else) looking forward to not being so inundated with all things politics.? I will continue to post about politics and religion, but barring from something really weird going down with the election, I will be more than happy to take a break from adding fuel to the big fire of this presidential election.

But it's not over yet.? With the exception of one or two posts I have cooking, I am preparing myself to mostly be posting about this election for the next 24-48 hours.? My friends and I are making Obama t-shirts tonight (I will post a picture of mine later), I'm reading the news regularly and anything that grabs my eye I will probably post about (like last night), and whatever the results are I'm sure I'll have an opinionated post about.? This post however is more of a last attempt to not have any readers I have to vote for Romney.? I've had several posts on why he shouldn't be president where I've referenced other news sites saying the same thing.? This one is pure opinion.

A good friend of mine?has now resorted to?taking votes away from Romney as opposed to getting people to vote Obama.? It stemmed from a somewhat humorous story involving a family member sending a mass email out about his mathematical based prediction (guess) on how Romney will win by a landslide.? Instead of criticizing the math or once again pleading to his family to not vote Romney (as my friend is gay and doesn't want his family supporting a possible president who doesn't support him), my friend merely corrected his family member on the name he used for the projected new president (Mitchell Romney) by saying, "Mitt is not short for Mitchell."? This spared a humorous conversation about how we should all convince?all Romney supporters?to ONLY vote for Romney by his "full name", so if you don't see "Mitchell Romney" be sure to ignore any other Romneys on the ballot and write in "Mitchell Romney".?

"Mitchell Romney" aside, I have jumped on my friends band wagon and am pleading with you to vote for preferably Obama, but anyone but Romney.? It doesn't matter that he's still probably more middle of the road than he's campaigned.? It doesn't matter if you don't like the way the economy has gone the past 4 years (hello!? Republicans cocked blocked Obama several times from solutions AND Colin Powell has said that neither party superhero Reagan or Clinton could have fixed the debt better than Obama has).? What matters is that we don't go backwards.? Do you love a woman?? Don't vote against her.? Do you respect man or woman who happens to be homosexual?? Do not vote against them.? Do you enjoy religious freedoms (both the right to practice freely or to not practice at all)?? Do not vote against them.? Do you think Mormonism borders on being a cult?? Do not vote for a Mormon.? Do you know anyone living in poverty or the?ever?decreasing middle class?? Do not vote Republican (they save people in higher tax brackets and convince people in lower tax brackets to vote for them based on religious faith.? That is a fact).? I'm not convinced Romney would be able to overturn Roe v Wade, Obamacare (ummm, he had Obamacare in Massachusetts), or stop individual states from legally acknowledging?gay?marriages in the?next 4 years as the presidency is not a dictatorship.???However,?a vote for Romney is a vote for not caring if we move forward as a country.? Most other developed countries in the world does not have religious superstitions cater to their government, have more progressive social norms, and universal health care.? America is embarrassingly left behind.? In fact, the rest of the world would overwhelmingly vote for Obama if included in the election and everyday a new poll shows that.? This leads to me a somewhat obvious plea?for not being an ugly American for other countries to continue to mock.

I'm all about voting for things other than social norms as they sometimes can be more smoke in mirrors and can detract from other serious issues in politics.? But with this election allegedly being as close as it seems and so many people's rights riding on it-symbolic or actual-it is incredibly important to not vote for anyone who would hold us back.? Do no betray anyone you care about by voting for a man who will take away their rights, happiness, and safety (yes safety, as the more gay people are not considered equals the more hate crimes towards them will be tolerated, as well as if abortion was made illegal women would still get them but through unsafe means).? If you're religious, do as JESUS would do and not what your church may say and help the poor, the sick, and the ones not as accepted by society.? Obama at least seems to take every one's plights into consideration; Romney does not.?

This is too close for comfort so I must beg of people to not vote for Romney.? Maybe the next election I won't be begging for you to cock block the guy I'm not voting for from winning.? I don't know what the landscape will be in four years.? If you agree with any of this, share it on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, wherever in hopes of persuading the undecided.? At this point if you don't like Obama, fine.? Don't vote for him.? But?please vote?for any of the other 3rd parties, including the one Roseanne Barr is on (seriously...).? Let's continue to move forward and not go back to a more articulate version of George W.? So if you haven't already done early voting, please vote for anyone but Romney...or write in "Mitchell Romney".?

Please and thanks.?

PS- More reasons why Romney sucks here,, here, here, AND here!

Shine on you crazy diamond: why humans are carbon-based lifeforms

Previous posts in the Chemistry series: Hydrogen-bonds, van der Waals forces, metallic bonding, ionic bonds

Everything on earth is made up of combinations of different elements ? all of which can be found on the periodic table. Considering that the periodic table contains 118 elements it seems a pity that organic life tends to feature only five or six of those elements in any vast quantities. The main one being carbon.

As well as being the main element in organic matter, carbon atoms are the only element in both graphite and diamond. Image credit below.

It would be impossible for life on earth to exist without carbon. Carbon is the main component of sugars, proteins, fats, DNA, muscle tissue, pretty much everything in your body. The reason carbon is so special is down to the electron configuration of the individual atoms. Electrons exist in concentric ?shells? around the central nucleus and carbon has four electrons in its outermost shell. As the most stable thing for an atom to have is eight electrons, this means that each carbon can form four bonds with surrounding atoms.

Carbon forming four bonds with four hydrogen atoms.

Each bond in the above molecule is formed by the sharing of two electrons; one from the carbon and one from the hydrogen. The ability to form four bonds isn?t?restricted?to carbon though, it?s a property of every atom with four outer electrons, including silicon, tin and lead. What?s special about carbon, and the reason that silicon-based lifeforms are restricted to science fiction (and lead-based lifeforms are hardly ever mentioned) is that it can form double-bonds which share more than one electron with another atom, as shown below:

Each carbon has formed four bonds (four lines coming out of each C) but two of the bonds are with the same molecule.

Why is carbon able to do this while silicon can?t? Although the bonds are all drawn as straight lines in the diagram above, in real life not all bonds are equal. The double bond consists of two different types of bond. Each bond is made up of two electron orbitals (one from each atom) which have overlapped. The easiest way to think of an orbital without getting into some serious physics is as a blurry sort of zone in which a fast-moving electron is most likely to be whizzing about. When two orbitals overlap, you have double the space which two electrons can whiz around in.

The single bond is formed by two circular orbitals overlapping and surrounding both atoms:

Two spherical orbitals overlap and share electrons and electron-space. The carbon nucleus is in the centre of each sphere.

The second bond is formed slightly differently. The electrons that form these bonds are not in a spherical orbital around the nucleus, they are in oval-shaped orbitals that protrude above and below the nucleus. When they overlap the bond forms above and below the first bond, as shown in the diagram:

The first bond is shown by the line surrounded by the fuzzy green plane. Image credit below

So why can carbon and not silicon manage this double-bond trick? The answer lies in the size. Carbon is the smallest of all the atoms with four outermost electrons, which means that the electrons in the above-and-below orbitals are close enough to overlap and form that second bond. For silicon however, there are more electron orbitals in the way, the entire atom is bigger, and it is almost impossible for the outer orbitals to get close enough to form a double bond. This is why carbon dioxide is is a small gaseous molecule consisting of two oxygens both forming a double bond with a single carbon while silicon dioxide is a massive behemoth of a molecule made of huge numbers of alternating?oxygen?and silicon atoms and is more commonly known as sand.

Silicon dioxide (sand) on the left, carbon dioxide on the right

You can just about get silicon-silicon double bonds if you try hard, but they are fairly unstable and will take any chance they can to loose that double-bond in favour of forming another single one. Carbon-carbon double bonds on the other hand form naturally and easily, and are crucial for every living organism on earth. If there were to be silicon-based lifeforms, the sheer chemistry of their atoms means that they would have to be built along very different lines to life on earth.
