Obama going to Ohio to challenge GOP on economy (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama is pushing his economic message in Ohio, brandishing his presidential megaphone in a politically important state to make certain his appeal to the middle class is heard amid the boisterous start of the Republican campaign for the White House.

Obama was traveling Wednesday to the most Democratic congressional district in Ohio, a Cleveland suburb, a day after Mitt Romney won Iowa's Republican presidential caucuses by just eight votes. Obama's trip signals the White House's intent to keep the president in the public eye even as the political world focuses on the GOP's selection process.

The White House's choice of Ohio for Obama's first presidential trip of 2012 underscores the state's high-profile role in presidential politics. It is a swing state that went for George W. Bush in 2004 and for Obama in 2008. A top manufacturing state, Ohio has seen its jobless rate follow the national pattern; unemployment was 8.5 percent in November compared with 9.6 percent a year before.

Obama set the tone Tuesday for a White House strategy that aims to maintain pressure on congressional Republicans while promoting an economic plan that serves as much as a policy prescription as it does a political platform for the general election.

Addressing Iowa Democrats by teleconference as the GOP caucus counting was still under way, Obama described Republicans as embracing a "theory that says we're going to cut taxes for the wealthiest among us and roll back regulations on things like clean air and health care reform, Wall Street reform, and somehow that automatically that assures that everybody is able to succeed."

"I don't believe that," Obama declared.

Pressing his economic agenda, Obama has said expanding the middle class is "the defining issue of our time." His spokesman, Jay Carney, on Tuesday called it "his No. 1 focus."

As defined by the president and by his advisers, his economic argument is that the middle class is facing a "make or break moment." On that score, Obama still has a few confrontations with Congress in the year ahead.

He still wants to extend a payroll tax cut for all of 2012. Republicans avoided being blamed for a tax increase last month when House GOP leaders agreed to a two-month extension. A longer version will have to be decided by the end of February. Obama is also likely to point to elements of a jobs package he advanced last year that failed in the face of Republican opposition.

Obama is also at odds with Senate Republicans over his nomination of Richard Cordray as head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a central feature of new bank regulations that Congress approved and Obama signed in 2010. Republicans are blocking Cordray's appointment, effectively hamstringing the bureau's work. Battling Wall Street overreach has been a recurrent Obama theme as he advocates for the middle class.

Signaling that he would continue to draw sharp lines between the middle class and the wealthy, Obama told the Iowa Democrats in his videoconference Tuesday that he would insist on the rich paying more in taxes.

"If we're going to make the investments that we need for our kids at the same time as we're controlling our deficit, then there's nothing wrong with saying to millionaires and billionaires that we're going to let your tax cuts expire," Obama said. "The other party has a fundamentally different philosophy."

Administration officials say they were especially encouraged by the public's response to Obama's call for extending the payroll tax cut and indicate Obama will make such appeals repeatedly to gain leverage over Congress and Republicans, in particular.

"There are more things that need to be done," Carney said Tuesday. "There are elements of the jobs act that we believe, as we did from the beginning, merit bipartisan consideration and support. This country is in crying need of work on its infrastructure."

In speaking at Shaker Heights High School on Wednesday, Obama is returning to a Cleveland suburb that he visited in 2009 while pushing his health care overhaul plan. Obama also planned to meet with a family at their home, a tactic Obama has employed before to personalize his agenda.

Interview With Katie Leclerc From Switched at Birth

The ABC Family breakout hit show Switched at Birth is back and things are going to be crazy. I know this because I got the chance to interview the oh so lovely Katie Leclerc, who plays Daphne, the other day. If you are a fan of the show then you know that Katie is an amazing actress but what some of you may not know is that she is an awesome person as well. I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to participate in a Q&A interview session with Leclerc and she was a pleasure to talk to. Of course a good part of the conversation had to do with the return of Switched at Birth, which just so happens to be tomorrow night at 8PM EST. Katie shared that there?s a lot of rebuilding for Daphne and Angelo, actually more like starting to build a relationship. Daphne will have to figure out what she cares about, what she wants and it will force to her go after what she wants. Life is going to continue to be a struggle for Daphne that is for sure. Things aren?t all bad though for Daphne she does find success in her [...]

M. BASKETBALL | Elis can't contain No. 10 Florida

Gainseville, Fla. ? Playing its last game of the year far from home on New Year?s Eve, Yale rang in 2012 by falling just short of one of the country?s top teams.

Despite an impressive 9-0 start against No. 10 University of Florida (10?2) the Elis (8?4, 0?0 Ivy) could not contain the Gators and fell, 90-70 in front of 9,119 at the O?Connell Center on Florida?s campus.

Two days after starting slowly in a close loss at Wake Forest, the Bulldogs came out on fire against Florida. The Elis got consecutive three-pointers from Austin Morgan ?13, Reggie Wilhite ?12 and Greg Mangano ?12 to open the contest before the Gators responded.

Mangano said that the team emphasized starting strong. But the route to Yale?s quick start was not typical of the team. Head coach James Jones added that although Yale?s first four shot attempts against Florida were from beyond the arc, shooting had not been the main focus coming into the game.

?I tried to make the point that we were going to have to handle the ball,? Jones said about team practice on Friday. That focus seemed to pay off and Yale turned the ball over only 11 times throughout the game.

Despite the Elis' early lead fireworks, Florida head coach Billy Donovan, whose team took the lead for good 5:13 into the game, said he was never worried.

?I liked where we were focus-wise,? Donovan said. ?There are certain times when you are sitting there as a coach and it is nine-nothing and you are annoyed, but I wasn?t really annoyed because I thought we were playing the right way on offense. I felt like we were locked in defensively.?

The Gators responded to their early 9?0 deficit by rattling off a 29-6 run to take control. Although Florida would hold the lead for the rest of the game, Yale pulled within five points with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. But Gator guard Kenny Boynton destroyed Yale?s hopes of a comeback when he connected from long distance on successive possessions. His second three-pointer was part of a four-point play that pushed Florida?s lead back to nine. Jones was then called for a technical following a breakaway dunk by Florida forward Bradley Beal.

?I thought Bradley Beal had traveled,? Jones said. ?I let the referee know.?

Trailing by 11 at the half, the Bulldogs closed the gap to 54-48 with just under 15 minutes remaining. But the Gators pulled away again and stretched their lead to 26 points over the next ten minutes. Although the Bulldogs hit nine three-pointers in the first half, Florida converted eight of its own in the second half.

The Gators also dominated inside, scoring 37 points in the paint. Eleven more Florida points came on the fast break.

Although the Bulldogs could not keep up with the Gators, they received an impressive effort from Mangano, the preseason Ivy League player of the year. The 6?10? forward tied Boynton with a game-high 26 points on only 18 shots and hit four of his six three-point attempts.

?Mangano is a terrific and unique player,? Donovan said. ?I don?t think we?ll face another guy like that? I say this in a very complimentary way; he?s very awkward.? He added that Mangano combines the ability to create space fading away with physical post-play.

Mangano added 15 rebounds during the game, and Morgan scored ten points. Ten Bulldogs scored, but five Gators scored at least nine points.

The Bulldogs return home Jan. 3 to take on Holy Cross.

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? A Marine officer said Friday he reacted as he was trained to do by chasing two men who stole a gold necklace he thought they were buying, and then using his fingers to plug bullet holes in his body when one of them opened fire.

Lt. Col. Karl Trenker, a 29-year Marine Corps veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, demonstrated at a hospital news conference how he stuck his fingers on his left hand into two holes in his left chest and another finger from his right hand where a .22-caliber bullet entered his abdomen. His doctor said the move helped staunch the flow of blood.

"I'm a Marine and I'm not going to run from a fight," Trenker said. "You wouldn't want a Marine to run from a fight. Call me crazy, call me stupid. I got shot once and it just angered me more. I wanted to get this guy. I got shot twice, and I re-evaluated that decision. I decided I need to stay alive."

As for the use of his fingers, Trenker said, "I improvised."

Trenker, 48, was shot multiple times Dec. 21. He had driven with four of his children to meet a man who responded to a Craigslist ad for the necklace. Two suspects are jailed on attempted murder and robbery charges.

Trenker, who was released Friday from North Broward Medical Center, will be left with one slug lodged in his pelvis but otherwise should make a full recovery, said Dr. Igor Nichiporenko. The doctor credited Trenker's military training and fitness for his rapid recovery ? as well as his use of fingers to plug the bullet holes.

"I think he did the right thing," Nichiporenko said. "It's amazing. He's going to be fine."

The 18-inch necklace was put on Craigslist by Trenker's fianc?e, Tanya Saiz, who initially planned to meet the man and make the deal herself. The idea, she said, was to get a little extra cash for a surprise Christmas present for Trenker. But Trenker said he'd go instead, thinking that there could be a little danger involved. He figured he'd take the kids on to the beach afterward.

Even though he met the men in broad daylight at a busy apartment complex, one of them grabbed the necklace and ran off. After Trenker chased them and was shot, he made his way back to his truck ? where his four young boys were ? and called Saiz on his cell phone to tell her he'd been shot.

"I stopped for a minute, and was waiting for the punch line," she said. "I think I went into shock. It was the scariest moment of my life."

Nichiporenko said Trenker was bleeding internally and externally when he arrived at the hospital and was immediately taken into surgery. The gunshot to his abdomen required removal of a portion of one intestine, the doctor said.

Meanwhile, a Broward Sheriff's Office report said Trenker's 12-year-old son gave a detailed description of the assailants, who were quickly apprehended nearby. The men, James Flounory and Jeff Steele, both 20, are being held without bail; court records Friday did not indicate whether either man had a lawyer. A third man is charged with attempting to hide the gun.

Trenker said he intends to have a good holiday meal, get started on physical therapy and eventually return to active duty at the Marine Corps unit attached to the Miami-based U.S. Southern Command. His job there involves operations planning for counternarcotics and counterterrorism missions, one of which recently resulted in seizure of a 4,400-pound cocaine load off Honduras worth some $245 million.

"I believe according to my faith that somebody was watching over me. It could have been a lot worse," he said. "I feel extremely lucky."
