Iran Oil Ministry: Exports cut to Britain, France

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran has halted oil shipments to Britain and France, the Oil Ministry said Sunday, in an apparent pre-emptive blow against the European Union after the bloc imposed sanctions on Iran's crucial fuel exports.

The EU imposed tough sanctions against Iran last month, which included a freeze of the country's central bank assets and an oil embargo set to begin in July. Iran's Oil Minister Rostam Qassemi had warned earlier this month that Tehran could cut off oil exports to "hostile" European nations. The 27-nation EU accounts for about 18 percent of Iran's oil exports.

"Crude oil exports to British and French companies have been halted," Oil Ministry spokesman Ali Reza Nikzad-Rahbar said on the ministry's shana.ir website. "We have our own customers and have no problem to sell and export our crude oil to new customers."

Targeting Britain and France appeared to be a political decision by Iran to punish the two countries for supporting tougher sanctions against Iran over its disputed nuclear program.

Britain's Foreign Office declined comment, and there was no immediate response from French officials.

Sunday's announcement follows a flurry of contradictory signals by Iran about backlash against the EU for imposing a boycott on Iranian oil.

Last week, state media said Iran was planning to cut off oil exports to six EU nations, including France, but later reports said the nations were only told that Iran has no problem finding replacement customers for the European shipments.

The EU sanctions, imposed last month, were part of Western efforts to target Iran's critical oil sector in attempts to rein in Tehran's nuclear program.

The West fears Iran's nuclear program aim to develop atomic weapons. Iran denies the allegations, and says the program is for peaceful purposes like producing electricity and medical isotopes.

MONTVILLE, CONNECTICUT — Hours after the world paid its final goodbye to Whitney Houston in New Jersey, ex-husband Bobby Brown paid his alongside bandmates New Edition before a sold-out crowd at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Brown's remarks came just hours after the singer's rapid departure from Houston's funeral services at Newark, New Jersey's New Hope Baptist church.

Brown sat out the night's first three songs, then took the stage for "Hit Me Off."  He acknowledged the fallen icon before "Jealous Girl."

"I want to give blessings to my ex-wife, Whitney Houston. I love you," Brown said, pointing towards the sky. "I want to give a lot of blessings to my kids, my fiancée, my brothers, and all of you."

Brown and his New Edition band-mates powered through a set that lasted almost two hours, including hits from Brown's 1988 solo smash, "My Prerogative," to Bell Biv DeVoe's 1990 hit, "Poison."

"I lost three great people in my life, in the last year," Brown told the audience of over 7,000 before the sextet wrapped with "Home Again." "But, nothing makes me happier than to be right here, right now."

Some New Edition fans, like Lisa Pollock of Bridgeport, Conn., were simply happy just to see Houston's ex-husband in the building.

"[New Edition] just held it together. I can't imagine what today was like for them," Pollock said after the concert. "For them to come and do a show for all of us, definitely exceeded my expectations."

Serita Outlow of Norwich, Conn. also attended the show unsure if Brown would make it.

"I think he did an excellent job considering what he must have been feeling," she said. "I don't know what he went through with his voice today but I think he still pulled it off."

Roanoke Times Story Features FranNet Franchisee Rosen | Starting ...

A recent story in The Roanoke Times uses a former delivery truck driver-turned-yogurt franchise owner to illustrate what we at FranNet have been experiencing for the last few years now ? professionals who change careers in middle age and turn to franchising as a means to a more secure future. Cary Broome worked for 24 years as a United Postal Service delivery driver.

Now 53, he?s retired and he and his wife have decided to take on a new endeavor. They are opening a franchised self-serve frozen yogurt shop, at Hunting Hills Plaza in Roanoke next to Kohl?s. They expect to open Feb. 17.

The couple have poured their savings and stocks into the business, a move that makes them somewhat worried given the economy. But Broome said he believes that opening a franchise is less risky than starting their own business.

?It?s really scary to me because we don?t have any business experience,? he said. ?That?s why we chose a franchise.?

Franchising offers first-time business owners guidance, support and a proven business model.

And in today?s economy, starting a business can provide more stability than a job in corporate America. Franchises in particular can be see as lower risk.

?For a lot of people, it?s really their only hope,? said Heather Rosen, a Virginia-based consultant for FranNet, which offers advice and education to potential franchisees.

?What I?m hearing from people is that, ?My job isn?t stable. I need more income security,? ? Rosen said.

A report by research firm IHS Global Insight conducted for the International Franchise Association estimates that after three years of decline, the number of franchises will grow this year by 1.9 percent, from an estimated 735,571 establishments in 2011 to 749,499 businesses this year.

The forecasted growth also means more jobs. The report estimates that new franchises will contribute to 168,000 new jobs, an increase from last year.

James Gillula, managing director for IHS Global Insight, said that the projected growth of franchise business is slightly behind that of independent business, but that job growth in franchising is ahead.

?One of the primary reasons is that access to credit, while improving, continues to hinder growth in parts of the franchise sector,? he said.

For instance, the lodging sector is expected to see 3.1 percent growth, according to the report. Franchises that fall in the retail products and services sector will see only 0.1 percent growth. Retail food franchises are expected to grow by 0.9 percent.

In addition to tight lending, the decline in franchises the past three years is also attributed to lower levels of consumer spending.

But consumer spending grew slightly in the fourth quarter of 2011, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the IFA expects it to continue to grow this year.

Franchise or independent?

When you start a franchise business, you?re in business for yourself, but not by yourself ? that?s the franchising catch phrase that hooked Broome when he was exploring the idea of opening a franchise.

?We don?t have any experience,? Broome said. ?We?ve never run our own business.?

He and his wife, who works in human resources, wanted to open the frozen yogurt store to diversify their income, Broome said. He also wanted to be part of the community, he said, and to have an opportunity to teach his two daughters about work ethic.

US crude oil supplies fell last week (AP)

NEW YORK ? The nation's crude oil supplies decreased last week, the government said Wednesday.

Crude supplies shrank by 200,000 barrels, or 0.1 percent, to 339.1 million barrels, which is 2 percent below year-ago levels, the Energy Department's Energy Information Administration said in its weekly report.

Analysts expected an increase of 1.9 million barrels for the week ended Feb. 10, according to Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos.

Gasoline supplies grew by 400,000 barrels, or 0.2 percent, to 232.2 million barrels. That's 3.7 percent lower than year-ago levels. Analysts expected gasoline supplies to increase by 600,000 barrels.

Demand for gasoline over the four weeks ended Feb. 10 was 6.4 percent lower than a year earlier, averaging 8.1 million barrels a day.

U.S. refineries ran at 84 percent of total capacity on average, up 1.2 percentage points from the prior week. Analysts expected capacity to fall to 82.2 percent.

Supplies of distillate fuel, which include diesel and heating oil, fell by 2.9 million barrels to 143.7 million barrels. Analysts expected distillate stocks to decrease by 600,000 barrels.

Benchmark crude rose $1 to $101.74 a barrel in New York.

China's next leader Xi Jinping visits White House (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Washington is getting its first hard look at Xi Jinping, the man destined to lead China in the coming decade, during which the global powers probably will see their economic ties grow even as they are viewed increasingly as military rivals.

Vice President Xi is set to replace the staid Hu Jintao as Communist Party leader late this year, then succeed him as president in 2013. Xi, 58, is viewed as more personable, and while his trip is unlikely to herald any policy changes it may signal his leadership style.

Xi arrived Monday, and the highlight of his full four days in America was to be an Oval Office meeting Tuesday with President Barack Obama. That is a year after a bells-and-whistles state visit by Hu that helped set a positive tone in 2011 for U.S.-China ties.

There since have been bumps along the way, however, and Xi's visit will give the Obama administration a chance to press familiar issues with China, including its worsening treatment of dissidents, the unrest in Tibet and the vast U.S.-China trade imbalance.

Much of Xi's visit will be in the company of Vice President Joe Biden, who went to China as Xi's guest in August.

Xi also will meet with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, who will be hoping to inject some vigor into halfhearted ties between their two militaries. Washington will need to convince a skeptical Beijing that a U.S. "pivot" in its foreign relations to emphasize the economically booming Asia-Pacific region is not aimed at containing the rise of China ? which, in turn, needs to convince the U.S. and many Asian nations that they need not fear its two-decade military buildup.

Also on the agenda: North Korea, Iran and Syria, following China's decision last week to join Russia in vetoing a U.N. Security Council resolution pressuring Syrian President Bashar Assad's government over its violent crackdown on opponents.

But with Obama vying for re-election this November, and Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney already accusing the incumbent of being soft on China, the administration will be focused particularly on economic issues.

The primary American concern is likely to be on Chinese trade rule violations, but the U.S. also will reiterate problems with intellectual property theft and the value of China's currency. The renminbi has gained a little against the dollar in the past 1 1/2 years but still is viewed by Washington as undervalued to boost the exports that still drive China's economy.

Despite the wide array of issues at hand, U.S. officials see Xi's visit primarily as an investment in relationship-building, both on the personal level and to advance a three-year push for cooperative ties with Asia's emerging superpower.

After his visit to China, Biden said he was impressed by Xi's "openness and candor." Xi has impeccable Communist Party credentials as the son of a famed revolutionary, but is viewed as more able to make personal connections than Hu and more willing to step away from the traditional aloofness of Chinese high office.

After two days in Washington Xi will travel to Iowa, where he will meet those who hosted him when he visited the Midwestern state as a county official on a 1985 study tour. He then travels to Los Angeles to meet more business leaders.

Hu visited the U.S. in 2002, also shortly before he became China's leader, succeeding the more charismatic Jiang Zemin. As with Hu, the visit will give Xi a chance to burnish his credentials and show the audience back home he can manage ties with the U.S.

The intervening decade since Hu's formative visit has seen big changes, with China now eclipsing Japan as the world's second-largest economy and its military now posing a serious challenge to U.S. predominance in the western Pacific.

In written responses to The Washington Post on the eve of the visit, Xi emphasized the positive. He highlighted the profitability of U.S. companies in China and steps Beijing already has taken to address American economic concerns.

But he also made a dig at U.S. efforts to strengthen its military alliances in Asia ? expressing what U.S. officials have said are hardline personal views on China's security, sovereignty and national dignity.

Frequenters of India's online Microsoft Store were briefly greeted with the suspicious visage of a Guy Fawkes mask this morning, following a hack that compromised the site's user database. According to WPSauce, Microsoft Store India's landing page was briefly taken over by a hacker group called Evil Shadow Team, who, in addition to putting a new face on Windows products, revealed that user passwords were saved in plain text. The group's motivations are unknown, though the hacked page warned that an "unsafe system will be baptized." The store is now offline, suggesting that Microsoft may have regained control. CME CEO bearish on exchange mega-mergers - Finance News ...

(Reuters) ? Don't expect a new round of mega-mergers to sweep the global exchange industry, the chief executive officer of the biggest U.S. futures exchange operator said on Thursday.

While merging exchanges to create "national champions" will likely continue to be successful, "very complex, cross-border deals - probably much less so," CME Group Inc. CEO Craig Donohue said at a Credit Suisse investor conference.

CME, which has stayed away from cross-border deals, cemented its national dominance through domestic takeovers in 2007 and 2008

Earlier this month, European regulators rejected the merger of NYSE Euronext and Deutsche Boerse AG, making it the third large international exchange combination to fail in the last two years.

Shortly after getting the bad news that ended that $7.4 billion deal, NYSE chief Duncan Niederauer forecast exchange leaders would need time to regroup before pursuing any new deals, and he said that more companies would likely follow CME's example and return more money to shareholders.

CME had announced one day earlier a large increase in its dividend that cheered investors and sent its shares soaring. The shares had languished over the previous few months as investors fretted about the fallout from the collapse of MF Global, one of CME's largest customers, and the disappearance of hundreds of millions of dollars of traders' funds.

Speaking on Thursday, Donohue said the new dividend policy showed confidence in CME's ability to continue to grow without new mergers or acquisitions.

"It also removes doubt about whether we are kind of keeping capital for various and sundry reasons related to things like MF Global, or other types of increased capital costs to help deal with regulation," Donohue said.

CME's open interest fell late last year, in part because MF Global's failure sapped confidence in the safety of the futures industry. Open interest - a predictor of future trading activity - has since picked up strongly, Donohue noted.

CME's trading volumes this year are likely to be helped by the Federal Reserve's decision to publish interest-rate forecasts from its policymakers, Donohue said.

At its latest policy-setting meeting in January, the Fed signaled it would keep rates low through late 2014, exactly the kind of indication of rate stability that would typically dampen interest in CME's rate futures, which are often used to hedge against unexpected changes in borrowing costs.

But Fed policymakers, as part of their first public rate forecasts, also gave a wide range of projections for when they thought the first rate increase should be, with some saying it should be as soon as this year and others saying it should not be until 2016.

"We actually thought that was positive for us," Donohue said, because the broad range of opinions means uncertainty and for CME, uncertainty means business

"Market participants are almost always building open interest and positioning themselves well in advance of actual rate increases," Donohue added.

Winter is fast approaching Westeros, and if you can see through the downpour of snow, you'll notice a few new, not-so-friendly faces in the mix. Yes, several of your favorite characters will be back in action when "Game of Thrones" season two premieres April 1, but Jon, Tyrion, Dany and the rest will have their work cut out for them when new friends and foes join the battle for the Iron Throne.

To get you acquainted with some of these newcomers, HBO has released a slew of photos from the upcoming second season of the epic fantasy series, based on the "Song of Ice and Fire" novels from visionary writer George R.R. Martin. From men who would be kings to their trusted and true servants, here are five new "Thrones" characters about to enter the game:

"The Iron Throne is mine by rights." Get ready to hear that refrain early and often in season two as Stannis Baratheon enters the scene. Davos does not take kindly to Melisandre's newfound influence over Stannis — but like many others, he'll soon realize that the red priestess has more than enough bite to back up her bark.

Stannis Baratheon is not the only one competing for the crown of Westeros: There's also Balon Greyjoy, lord of the Iron Islands, to consider. The seafaring warrior is no stranger to fighting for the Iron Throne, having been put down in a rebellion many years earlier. But Balon sees new possibilities in another attempt to claim rule over Westeros — possibilities that may be helped or hindered by the return of his estranged son Theon, best friend and closest confidant to King in the North Robb Stark.

Gwendoline Christie as Brienne of Tarth
Serving a different king entirely is Brienne of Tarth, a fierce warrior woman often ridiculed by men for her masculine features and seemingly futile attempt to become a knight. But she's respected by the man who matters most to her: Renly Baratheon, brother of Stannis and another of the men vying for supremacy in Westeros. As part of Renly's elite guard, Brienne will stop at nothing to protect her king and further his agenda. But fate might have other plans in store for her ...

There's also an ongoing debate as to how much of the Change Management plan should be included in the overall work plan. ?I've met a number of Project Managers who don't want to see every single planned communication cluttering up their work plan. ?

Here's my recommendation. ?It's good to have as much of the Change plan in the overall project plan as possible, so that the integration between the teams is clearly visible. ?The functional and technical teams should understand how changes and delays in their activities impact Change Management activities. ?If that's not possible, however, the project work plan should?at a minimum?include Change Management milestones and the activities that are most impacted by other teams, such as training development.

If the Project Manager doesn't want any Change activities in the overall project work plan, you have bigger problems on your hands, and I suggest you set up a meeting immediately to discuss.

But enough of the introduction. ?It's time to discuss:

Practical Steps to Develop a Change Management Plan

Training:? Training is perhaps the most critical Change activity to plan well. ?You may not know exactly how many training courses you're going to develop or how many people you're going to train, but here are a few guidelines to get you started. ?(A quick disclaimer that will apply to the rest of the post: Work plans are living documents. ?You will constantly need to go back to update and refine your plan as you get new information. )

• Build some time for training into the Analyze, Design, and Build phases. ?Training developers who spend some time in business requirement meetings, system demonstrations, and testing will be better prepared to develop training...and will reduce the amount of time required from Business Analysts.
• The industry standard for the time required to develop training is this: It takes 40 hours of development time to create 1 hour of classroom training. ?It takes 200 hours of development time to create 1 hour of fully interactive computer-based training. ?Everything else falls somewhere in between.
• The level of expertise of the people developing training impacts the amount of time they require for development. ?Take this into consideration.
• During training development, Business Analysts should expect to devote 10% of their time to working with the training team. ?This is extremely important and often overlooked.
• For training delivery, assume that for the first time someone delivers a course, they will need 1 hour of preparation time for every 1 hour of training they are delivering.
• During training delivery, the technical team needs to devote a portion of their time to addressing technical issues and performing activities such as training instance refreshes.
• Training doesn't end at Go-live. ?There will be people who need to be trained in the 1 - 4 weeks after the system is implemented. ?Plan to have one or two team members stay around to deliver this training.

Communications:? Although you might not know exactly what communications you need to send each week throughout the project, assume that you will be busiest starting about a month before training delivery and lasting until about a week after Go-live. ?Also consider how many people will be impacted by the project and how geographically diverse they are. ?Finally, talk to your leadership about their expectations for communications. ?I had one client who wanted marching bands and giveaways. ?I had another client who thought it was excessive when I wanted to send out training reminders.

Change Management:? Change Management is more than just training and communications. ?As appropriate for your project, build into your plan activities such as Super User Networks, Executive Sponsorship activities, Stakeholder Management tasks, Change Readiness Assessments, and Change Impact Assessments.

Project Management:? Now is the time to have a frank conversation with the Project Manager about where you want to draw the line (or not) between Change Management and Project Management activities. ?This is an ongoing debate that I won't address here. ?Suffice it to say that you should determine what will work for your project and plan accordingly. ?Discuss who will conduct activities such as project and phase kick-offs, lessons learned sessions, and presentation development and delivery for Sponsors. ?These activities take a lot of time, and it's important to know who will be responsible for them.

Administrative Tasks:? Finally, if you've planned all of these activities and they will require every second of every day for every Change Management team member, you need to stop and re-evaluate. ?First, remember that everyone needs a bathroom break at some point. ?Second, keep in mind that unexpected activities will arise and you need the flexibility to absorb those that fall to Change Management. ?Third, you need to build in time for administrative tasks. ?They may not be high on your list of fun things to do, but you still need to take the time to update your work plan, review and approve work done by other people, and attend meetings. ?If you forget to plan in time for these activities, you will quickly find yourself falling behind or working a lot of overtime. ?I've heard people say that a good rule of thumb is to expect administrative tasks to consume 10% of your work hours. ?Unfortunately, I find it tends to be more.

Contingency:? Most projects build some amount of contingency into their work plans. ?It never hurts to build a little into your team's plan, as well.

A final note: ?One of my favorite phrases comes from the world of SCUBA...Plan your dive. ?Dive your plan. ?Finding the right balance between this philosophy and being flexible enough to roll with the punches that are part of any project is the true test of anyone responsible for managing part of a project plan.

Boston, MA: Berklee?s student-run label?Heavy Rotation Records?(HRR) releases its latest project,?Under the Influence, on February 14. The compilation ? available on CD and via download ? features Berklee students and alumni covering some of rock?s biggest names, including REM, Green Day, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead, and Smashing Pumpkins, and the seminal bands that influenced their sounds?Mission of Burma, H?sker D?, Joy Division, Gang of Four, the Pixies, and My Bloody Valentine.

Listen to?Under the Influence?at?HeavyRotationRecords.bandcamp.com.?HRR?s versions span rock, pop, folk/bluegrass, hip-hop, and metal.

Under the Influence?was produced by Paul Kolderie, cofounder of famed Fort Apache Studios, who produced or engineered some of the original artists. Unlike past HRR CDs, where students submitted songs already recorded, Kolderie went into the studio with artists chosen by the label and helmed the project from the beginning. He used the same console from sessions with the Pixies and Radiohead, along with some of the original amps, pre-amps, and mics. ?Unfortunately the original studios are gone, so we couldn?t go to those locations,? said Kolderie. ?But we did as much as possible to incorporate the older gear into the new songs.? In addition to Pixies and Radiohead, Kolderie?s credits include Billy Bragg, Buffalo Tom, Dinosaur Jr., Hole, Morphine, Portugal. The Man, and many more.?

The album features?Julia Easterlin?(Pixies, Radiohead),?Da?Rayia?(Gang of Four, Red Hot Chili Peppers),?David Pramik featuring Johnny Duke?(Joy Division, U2),?the Boston Boys featuring Emily Elbert?(H?sker D?, Green Day),?the Berklee String Metal Ensemble?(My Bloody Valentine, Smashing Pumpkins),?and?Pinn Panelle?(Mission of Burma, REM). The project gave each HRR artist the opportunity to reinterpret songs by a pair of these classic bands, writing their own arrangements and instrumentations for the new versions. Although the artists are performing covers for this project, they are not cover bands. Each writes and performs original music in varied genres?with the exception of the Berklee String Metal Ensemble.?

HRR?s faculty advisor?Jeff Dorenfeld?hatched the concept for the record while talking to his son one day. ?He was listening to My Bloody Valentine and Husker D?, and it dawned on me that these bands have become more popular because of the bands they influenced,? said Dorenfeld. He took the idea into his class and added constraints: a member of the influenced band had to mention the influential band [in print], and the influential band could not have had a major recording career. The students researched the bands to choose the artist pairings. ?We also decided to cover the bands in different genres than the original recording, which led to picking a bluegrass band to cover punk bands Husker?D??and Green Day, for instance,? he added.

HRR is a class that gives music business/management majors at Berklee hands-on experience in running a record company. Under Dorenfeld?s guidance, the student staff oversees all of the label?s functions, including marketing, sales, web development, media, and accounting. The label presents events in the Boston area and at some of the music industry?s largest festivals, including SXSW in Austin and the CMJ Music Marathon in New York, and recently had an artist perform at Lollapalooza in Chicago. HRR celebrated?Under The Influence?with a concert in Boston that featured a special guest performance by Roger Miller of Mission of Burma.

The label?s releases since 1995 have included?Shekinah: 13 Artists, distributed by Epic; Apollo Sunshine?s second CD, coreleased with spinART; and?Dorm Sessions 1-7. Many up-and-coming artists have appeared on HRR albums, including St. Vincent (as Annie Clark), members of Passion Pit (as the Peasantry), the Click Five (as Oscar Bravo), Christopher Barnes (of Gem?Club); Elizabeth and the Catapult; Big D and the Kids Table, and Madi Diaz. The label also serves as a springboard for careers in the music industry. HRR alumni have gone on to work at Interscope, Capitol, DreamWorks, BMG, Universal, Live Nation, AEG Live, and RightsFlow.

RightsFlow collaborated with HRR to provide marketing and licensing support for the recording project. Licensing was provided through Limelight, RightsFlow?s online mechanical clearance utility that ensures legal compliance and accurate accounting and payment to songwriters and publishers. Designed by musicians for musicians, Limelight is a simple way for any artist, band, choir, or other musical group to clear any cover song for release. RightsFlow was acquired by Google in 2011.

About the artists:

Julia Easterlin?is one part siren, one part loop scientist, and a sophisticated musical mind that?can wield composition, production, and performance in one fell swoop.?Not only is Easterlin a versatile singer-songwriter, vocalist, pianist, and guitarist, but her looping?machine also makes her into a virtual one-woman band.?In 2007,?she?was awarded a full scholarship to Berklee, where she graduated with a degree in several disciplines.?Under the Influence?marks Easterlin?s second HRR appearance: she was also featured on?Dorm Sessions 7. Easterlin performed at Lollapalooza, SXSW and CMJ in 2011, and traveled to Cuba to perform with the?Berklee Interarts Ensemble.

Da?Rayia?is a band of Berklee students that play a variety of genres, including hip-hop, jazz, soul, funk, rock, and reggae, fronted by vocalist and rapper Da?Rayia Wilson. The group features Dennis?Drummond on guitar, Clynton Cox on bass, Coran Henley on drums, and Jonathan Lotson on keyboards.?Wilson, the group?s namesake, was the first winner of the Berklee and?Essence?magazine hip-hop songwriting contest. She subsequently was awarded a full scholarship to?Berklee. Wilson, a dual major in music business/management and contemporary writing and production, is busy writing, performing, and producing her own music.

David Pramik featuring Johnny Duke:?David Pramik?s debut album?Expectations?is catching listeners with its intricate guitar work and vocal harmonies. Pramik draws inspiration from artists like D?Angelo, Norah Jones, and A Tribe Called Quest. Berklee graduate?Johnny Duke?picked up the electric guitar at 10 and fell in love with the blues. Pramik and Duke are joined by students, guitarist Matt Thompson, bassist Spencer Stewart, vocalist Avena Savage, and drummer Tom Myers; and keyboardist Nate Hopkins. The Boston Boys featuring Emily Elbert:?The Boston Boys?have been touring the past two years. Armed gangs, kidnappings, killings, and garbage-strewn streets have turned this shantytown into the Western Hemisphere?s most notorious slum. But now the situation is changing ? thanks in part to a group of determined residents who have had enough.

Each Saturday they meet to discuss issues ranging from health care to education and sanitation, from crime to the overall well-being of the community. Then they pick up shovels and brooms and clean up the neighborhood.

?We?re proud that this has become the cleanest and safest neighborhood in all of Cit? Soleil,? says Luckson Saint-vil, secretary-general of the neighborhood organizing committee La Difference that spans about four square blocks. Gang members feel unwelcome and weapons have been banned, he says.

He says that the residents have also been talking up their success in other parts of Cit? Soleil. ?Our message is simple: It is not your neighborhood that makes you; it is you that makes your neighborhood.?

Indonesian pilot arrested for alleged drug use (AP)

SURABAYA, Indonesia ? Indonesian police say they have arrested an airline pilot on suspicion of using illegal drugs three hours before flying.

Narcotics agency director Brig. Gen. Benny Mamoto says Lion Air pilot Syaiful Salam was arrested early Saturday in his hotel room in Surabaya city with a small amount of crystal methamphetamine in his possession.

He says a urine test showed Salam had also consumed the drug. The pilot was scheduled to fly three hours later.

Salam is the fifth Lion Air pilot to be arrested for alleged drug use in two months.

My husband and I have been together for nine years now and I can?t wait to celebrate our ten year anniversary! We dated for three years, were engaged for two, and have been married for four? yeah there was some serious courtship going on there and deep, deep reflection because we wanted to make sure that this was a??forever type of love??and not just two hopeless romantics??infatuated with love?.?As I reflect on how we?ve made it this far, I can honestly say that one thing sticks out is-?sincere communication.

Share how you really feel about your co-workers and boss. 4.)????Good communication happens when you choose to make your primary goal understanding rather than being understood.?This is one of the hardest parts of communicating to a spouse- especially if you are in the midst of a heated argument. I know firsthand that I always want my husband to understand where I?m coming from, but in the end that usually backfires as if I?m not listening to him or understanding his point of view. So I?ve learned that it?s best to make my primary goal to listen and be understanding, once he realizes how open I?m am, he will in turn give me the same respect.

LeVar Burton now tweets for Reading Rainbow

Before he donned those funky futuristic shades as Starfleet engineer Geordi LaForge, LeVar Burton was synonymous with "Reading Rainbow," and now he's taking charge in its latest iteration: He's started a multimedia company and wrested control of the dormant @ReadingRainbow Twitter account.

After repeatedly tweeting directly to @ReadingRainbow and receiving no response, Burton on Tuesday night decided to tweet this to Twitter itself instead:

Like a photon torpedo, that message hit its intended target and by Wednesday morning, Burton was captain of the @ReadingRainbow Twitter account:

Maybe Burton can port some of his 1.7 million followers over to @ReadingRainbow, which was still under 1,000 last we checked.

"Reading Rainbow" ran on PBS with Burton introducing generations of children to the joy of books as the show's host for 26 years, ending in August 2009. Many of my friends can still summon the theme song instantly. As NPR pointed out, its run on PBS was third only to "Sesame Street" and "Mister Rogers."

It's not the first time Burton has shown his tech savvy. In 2005, he established the?Levar Burton Vision Enhancement Technology Center, which developed technology for the blind.?

Amazon 4Q results, outlook sends stock lower (AP)

NEW YORK ? Shoppers spent more money online this holiday season than ever before, and yet, Amazon _the world's largest Internet retailer_ failed to meet Wall Street's sales expectations with its latest financial results.

In a surprise, the company's revenue fell nearly $1 billion short of Wall Street's expectations, even as it grew 35 percent from a year earlier. The quarter included Amazon's headline-grabbing November launch of the Kindle Fire, its answer to Apple's iPad. Its net income also fell sharply and its guidance for the current quarter was disappointing.

Investors punished the stock. Amazon's shares dropped $17.44, or 9 percent, to $177 in after-hours trading on Tuesday following the earnings announcement.

Though revenue grew 35 percent to $17.4 billion, analysts expected the holidays to lift sales to $18.3 billion, according to FactSet.

Even so, BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis said the company "didn't really give a good answer" as to why its revenue fell short of expectations. And while its earnings were stronger than expected, he said the company has been "more revenue driven than earnings driven."

That explains why investors focused on the company's sales growth. With a stock valued as high as Amazon's, they are looking for any sign of a slowdown as an excuse to sell.

Meanwhile, Amazon's expenses are increasing. Operating expenses grew 38 percent to $17.2 billion. The company has been investing heavily in new sales-fulfillment centers. Investments such as these cut into profits during all of last year.

Seattle-based Amazon.com Inc. said that its net income was $177 million, or 38 cents per share, in the three months that ended Dec. 31. That's down 57 percent from $416 million, or 91 cents per share, a year earlier. Earnings dropped, the company said, as it continued to invest in sales fulfillment centers and increased its workforce by 67 percent from a year earlier.

For the current quarter, Amazon is forecasting $12 billion to $13.4 billion in revenue. Analysts were expecting $13.42 billion. The company also said it may record an operating loss for the quarter. Its outlook was in the range of a loss of $200 million to a profit of $100 million for the three months ending in March.

Analysts had been worried about Amazon's profit margins because of the heavy operating expenses, but they had expected stronger revenue growth.

Although the company's earnings of 38 cents a share were well above Wall Street expectations of 17 cents, investors seemed to focus on the bad news elsewhere.

Amazon said sales of its Kindle tablet computers and e-reader gadgets nearly tripled compared with the final quarter of 2010. The company did not give exact sales numbers for the devices.

The Kindle Fire, Amazon's $199 tablet, went on sale in November. The company sees the Kindle as a way to drive sales of digital content such as e-books, music, movies and apps.

CEO Jeff Bezos said the Kindle was Amazon's bestselling product during the holiday season in both the U.S. and Europe.

Sales at Amazon's media business, which includes books, DVDs, and content consumed on the Kindle, grew 15 percent to $6 billion. Sales from electronics and other general merchandise, which includes the Kindle devices, jumped 48 percent to $10.9 billion.

The company grew its employee base 67 percent from a year earlier, ending the year with 56,200 full-time and part-time workers. Chief Financial Officer Tom Szkutak said the job additions were in operations and customer service to support Amazon's growth.

For all of 2011, Amazon earned $631 million, down from $1.15 billion a year earlier. Revenue grew to $48.1 billion from $34.2 billion.

Amazon's stock dropped $17.44, or 9 percent, to $177 in after-hours trading following the earnings announcement.
